HELP - unknown box

Hi everyone,

A friend of mine recently bought a flat in London, and in the entrance hall there is a box installed close to the ceiling with a cable running to a dead end just below it (see attachments).
The box allocates 4 12V batteries. No serial number or fabricator name on it! Can anyone help me understanding what that is supposed to be??

Well Picture 1 appears to be a telephone point minus the frontplate. Pictures 2 and 3 are the doorbell.

The door bell chime in pic 3 does not require batteries as it appears to be hard wired back to a transformer.

Do you think the "telephone" wire could actually be connected to the front door of the building? it is wired directly to the bell in fact...otherwise I would see no reason for having a bell inside the flat!

It may be part of an intercom system yes....bit difficult to say from here though.

the chime is a friedland DINGDONG type its either battery 4no"D"cell 1.5v or as yours looks transformer operated as for the single box with multi core depending what height it could be either phone point or door entry
