Thought I would change a ceiling light in the bathroom, cord pull switch, lamp holder in the ceiling.

When taking the old holder down the cables came away from the holder before I could make a note of what goes where.

I'm now left with 2 cables in the ceiling each with a red, black and earth cable (although I think the earth was turned up and not used). There are 3 connections in the lamp holder and I've tried several combinations, the best I can get is for the light to come on but it wont switch off.

Can anyone help with the correct connections please

Thanks

you need to find the switch wire with a multimeter. with the lighting isolated. find out which cable goes short circuit when you operate the switch, then both reds in loop, the switchwire black to lamp L. remaining black to lamp N. sleeve the switch return with red sleeve to ID it as a switched L.

do you have a multi meter or voltage testers?
I would assume that you have a mains feed red/black (live and neutral) and the second cable is to the pullswitch (live / sw-live), the confusing part is that the switch live probably isnt marked up correctly and is still just a black core. What are the connections on new light marked up as? i.e. SW-L / N / L / earth or is it just L / N / earth ???

Thanks
I've found the cable to the switchpull
The light and cable are from B&Q, the connector does not seem to have any markings, just four holes that you pushn the cable through and it self grips

if there are 4 holes, they will be

loop ( 2 reds ),
switched L ( black from switch )
N ( the other black)
E ( the cpc's)

the loop terminal will be the one that has no connection to the fitting.

Thank you, from this can you tell which is the loop terminals [ElectriciansForums.net] Help with a ceiling light

None of those terminals are for the loop in or CPC's!!!!!!

What you have there is a pair of terminals for the switched line to the light fitting & the neutral to the light fitting.

The 'loop in' & 'CPC' conductors will need terminating in their own separate terminals away from the lampholder i.e a wago or a helacon etc.

I reccomend you contact a spark before you hurt yourself & I'm shocked at the advice given to you by some members so far!!
