hi been house bashing for many of years , never done any or been showed how to install cat 5/6 computer cabling ,any advice or sites to get an idiot guide to.many thanks.

it's very similar to telephone cabling. sockets and patch panels have the terminals colour coded. terminate your 4 pairs each end. some sockets use same idc tool as telecom, some are different. you have to get the right one.a tester is only about ÂŁ10.

Running cat5e is not complicated, installing cat6 ( if it's going to run at optimum speed ) needs more careful consideration m some cable manufacturers offer training

cat 5 cat 6 cabling terminating pretty simple ,you have 2 choices when it comes to terminating, the colour code is normally on side of terminations A or B A is american standard B is british so we try and stick to b terms ,my advice to you is when pulling in cables try and pull in bunches of twelve once you have 24 bunch them ,this makes terminating easier because you allready have cables in correct bunches normally 24 to a rail 24/48.when terminating its important to try and keep the twists in cable up to the end of termination, tools required permanent pen to number cables, tape to tie cables in bunches, tie wraps or velcro cat 6 recomends velcro, terminating tool normally a 110 punch down tool or a krone.Testing equipment is expensive if you are looking for something to show length of run ,or you could use a mod tap which only proves wire map it depends what your client wants in the form of test results.

ÂŁ10 testers are a waste of time, might as well just plug it in and see if it works (we all love that phrase don't we!). There are many types of faults a cheap tester won't pick up. I have a Fluke qualifier, which was about ÂŁ1100 and that's the cheapest tester that I would go for, and that doesn't even certify. You're looking around ÂŁ2.5k for anything decent for testing cat5/6, and if you're doing anything non domestic that's what they'll expect. For domestic I guess they might not be so bothered but it's a bit of a gamble whether the link would be good or not without a proper tester, especially if you haven't got the experience of 000s of terminations behind you. You could always get in touch with a local data guy and pay him to do all the testing and certs when you're done if you're confident installing it all?

yeah, and he would turn up with a ÂŁ10 tester.cat 5/6 is glorified bt cable,a monkey could connect it.its installing it that,s the art,and I.t guys are **** at it.they would lay it under the carpet if they could.run it in pal,its money for old rope

I would stick with cat5e if you're inexperianced, it will run gigabyte ethernet and should be adequate for home and general commercial. cat6 is more high-end corperate and datacentre backbone cabling.

Here's an ebook for you if you have a torrent client set up, I've just started reseeding it so it should be available.

bit harsh but for the most part true. I love it when you are shown the comms room and told be careful. ever tried walking over a spiders web of data cables, extn leads and mc donalds wrappers without causing a bit of grief for the IT guys.

love it. from the op i thought he was talkng about domestic/small commercial. not Big Banks ( they can lose all the money without our help anyway) . i've done loads of data cable installation, then along come the IT guys with their fancy testers and earn in 20 mins what i've made in a week doing the real work. OK rant over. may their hard drives remain hard at least till their 70.
