Hi all, i have been asked to get infomation on the procedure to install a smoke dectector system in a small shop with a flat above it ,also it has a small basement and small loft conversion.

Would the first port of call be the local building control for them to stipulate the type of system they require after they have done a fire risk assessment?

Would this building require just smokes or a full fire dection system with main control panel and sounders and would it have to be linked to fire service? (bs5839)

After the system has been stipulated who is contacted next, who would do the design.Would a specialist Manufactuer of alarm systems do the design for the sparks to install ???

many thanks inadvance

If you ask your LABC, the first thing they will say is 'can we see YOUR Fire Risk Assessment please?'

Have a good read of the information in this link: Fire safety law and guidance documents for business - Fire and resilience - Department for Communities and Local Government

I would have said your under the remit of the building control. In bygone days you use to be able to call the local fire brigade and the local fire officer would come out and give you advise on where to site and what to site.

I don't have access over here to the BS standard.

ouple of lads I know locally have used this and it helped them hope it might you

If it helps recent refurbishment of a large warehouse offices and toilets. The architect had a site visit from building control and the Fire Officer. They stipulated Emergency Escape routes and the structure of these Fire rated routes. He then called in a Fire Alarm Company when nearly completed and they did ther own install,Design and Certification. Before this I was asked to do the Fire Alarm System and when I saw the Fire Companies Quote I said they can do it as it was very Cheap.Make sure your Insurance covers you not onlyLiability but Professional Indemity which if you design or recommend a system you need cover and appropriate to Domestic or Commercial. House Bashing is Domestic Liability and you are not covered in Commercial Premises.

Thanks all, great help.

will start with fire assessment, then contact LABC.

The premises lack fire doors seperating cellar and upstairs accomodation and inadequate fire escape and no emergency lighting.

There are less than five people working and living in the premises though,if that has a bearing on the system type??

Would wireless interconected units be allowed or do they all have to be from the same circuit????????
