hi everyone,
i would just like to ask if anybody knows if its possible to set up self employed or ltd company whilst on benefits, the reason im asking is ive tried all the usual places like the jobcentre i am 39 i have been involved in electrical installation work since leaving school as a apprentice which i never finished in 2005 my partner became disabled so i was unable to continue working so i had to become her carer recently i have always wanted to return back to working in electrical installation work so i paid private for a course doing 17th edition 2382,part p level a,pat testing 2377 and building regs 2393 for the last ten weeks since finishing the course i have been trying to find out if its possible to get help with ie rent whilst i start up until the work starts to come in as its already cost me loads for the course and will cost a lot more to start up ie van, insurance for van pli and everything else does anybody know if there is any help or anywhere i can go for advice i want to do the c&g 2391 but am wary of paying more money out to still get knowhere ive looked at the 2330 but as i have a family and disabled partner this is not a viable option at moment any advice or help would be much appreciated

Sympathise with your predicament, but not really my department about any grants or help thats going around, have you tried the job seekers or job centre for any help, after all mate sounds like at least you are trying your best to better yourself, unlike half of em, who just want to do nothing and get money from us tax payers.

Dont know the actual facts of what you can do whilst on benefits
My nephew was out of work for 2 years and because he was termed long term unemployed he had up to a thousand pounds or more that would go to retraining on whatever course he choses
He is working now but says he is still entitled to this grant(he was asking me about the 2391 course)

Self employed at the outset can be very unstable money wise
See if they will pay, then work undercover for cash for a while whilst screwing the system
People not of these lands do so,why not homegrown initiative

If the politicians can do it , the banks can do it, foreigners that come here do it, why not you.

ive been to jobcentre they just keep referring me to business link which ive already contacted they said jobcentre should give advice but they just keep giving me different nos to ring who also jobcentre should help i am also in touch with afirm called blue orchid who give you 3 years business help does anybody know if its possible to test trade whilst on benefits ive seen a website called work based learning for adults for self employment where its possible to trade for 6 months and still receive benefits all profit has to remain in account then at 6 months point decide if to continue or wind it up but either way any profit is yours to keep its already cost £4,020 for course which i also got a megger 1552 and bs 7671.osg and basic tools i already have the tools as ive been doing electrical work for 23 yrs on and off i have looked at the jobs out there and most want 2391 or industrial exp which i have very little exp thaks for responding so quickly if only jobcentre was as efficient

Yer right about the 2391 my mate, i do think its an absolute travasty that you yourself have done most of the hard work and paid your own way to get this far and you are nearly there at the last hurdle and theres no help for you, what are these people sat in there ivory towers doing , not much by the sounds of, i am in complete contempt for these people and isn,t it common sense that you have done absolutely brilliant to get this far and they can,t just help you with whats now a fairley small last step for you, absolutely ridiculous, print this off yer computer and show it to the powers that be, and i am confident that the majority of good hard working electricians on here will back me up on this one.

as i said i paid for private course and will have to put more into it for a van,pli and everything else so all in all will be £6,000+ i dont want to put all this money in to set up only to find either i have no work coming in or cant take a wage just a little help to get going eg rent as i have a disabled partner wouldnt like to mess us up anymore financially which do you think would be better for me sole trader or ltd company if i do set up my mate who was on course with me set up in 4 weeks of finishing course and as already earned 3,000+ in first 2 months he set up as ltd business his mrs has good paid job where i would be only one bringing any dollar in jobcentre just say theyonly help jobseekers which im a carer so as far as they are concerned i dont have to work all well and good if you never want to get anywhere and sponge of people like you forever they just said you dont have to work see you in 3 years

Oh without a shadow of doubt mate, sole trader, as ltd company will bring other issues into play which you don,t need at minute, later on when you have got some yrs under yer belt and a good trading record and making plenty then take advice and see which way to go, but now in my opinion sole trader my mate.

Why not just trade as a sole trader, and don't tell the powers that be for the time being...Keep the money you make in a separate account, and make sure that you record your costs, both expenses and cost of sales on a balance sheet...then should they ask questions, then you can provide evidence. Let's face it...it is going to take several months for you to recoup the monies already spent thus far, and as such you are justified in my eyes. If you don't register with the HMRC within the first 3 months of becoming self employed, then they can give you a £100 fine...Therefore, begin trading, and then take a view of registering at the end of the first 3 months...you should at that point have a better understanding whether it is all viable.

The other option of setting up as a ltd co is a bit different, and more complicated...you could I guess be a 100% shareholder of the co, and take no salary and no dividends, and thus justifiably I guess keep receiving the benefits...It is trickier to set up however, as you will need a solicitor to set things up, and it is more difficult to transfer any costs you have incurred to the ltd co. A Ltd is cleaner longer term, but messier initially.

I would go for Sole Trader, and after 3 months register as self employed...when that 3 months is up (if you know what I mean) is up to you.

Yooj

i ve looked at both, sole trader is easier as you dont have to register with companies house and show them your profits and loss for end of year but with ltd the business is liable for any faults and claims where as sole trader your liable money wise with sole trader i would only have to get public liability insurance also i am in touch with a organization called blue orchid who will help with all business side of things including accounts for 3 years business plans things like that and will show me how to do all that also with ltd need business bank account at first it would be in debt to me and wouldnt be taking a wage or dividends this is what ive been asking jobcentre if i am not earning would i still be entitled to help trying to ask them that has been like pulling my own teeth it would be easier to stick my hand in c.c.u. for half hour i would enjoy that more than speeking to jokecentre just want to start up but not drown us in the process

Not sure of current situation but some years ago you could sign on as a casual worker to allow you to work when work was available. It involved signing on for the days when work was not available and not for the days you worked but you lost any benifits equivilent to the earned amount up to the standard rate, but anything you earned over that was yours. Annoying that your first lot of hours just go to the Gov. but at least you don't have to worry about some kind spirited soul daubing you in to the Spooks. Probably best to start back as a sparks casual helper to get a feel for how things are now before you jump in to the Self Employed gig.
Have you tried blagging the system for the cost of the 2391, you've got a good chance of getting it with all the other stuff alredy sorted.

Brue m8, you got 3months to register self employed anyway, so you got a degree of grace. You can test the water so to speak, build up some work in this period, more importantly, why not advertise for work now, this may take a month or two to generate anything, then you will have the three months grace.

I think every persons situation is different BUT with the test trading (if you can get on it with Inbiz) you do not have to register as self employed. You carry on picking up your benefits but you can not take any money out of the business for personal use,so basically you are still living on your benfits during the test trade period, which is upto six months.

When the test trade period is finished, you'll have proven if the business is viable or not,or have an idea at least. You then register self employed or don't.The money you have made during this period that you have not taken out of the business is now yours to put back in or whatever you need to do with it.

There are some grants and help available for start up businesses BUT it is different for each area and your circumstances (it's aa bit of a postcode lottery). If i were you I would contact Business Link in your area AND also seek out your local enterprise agency.

Step 1: Your support needs | Business Link

That link will give you some idea of grants and funding available.

Hope this helps and good luck.

DO NOT give up although at times it will seem like you're banging your head against a brick wall or maybe a studded one on a good day.

I forgot to add also,E-mails can easily be ignored.Always phone if you can and be persistent.

:)

Write to your local MP and tell him your situation. My local MP helped me in the past and they do have some push, with getting things rolling. At the end of the day they want your vote.Good luck mate:D

cheers mac i am willing to try anything including writing to a mp as u suggest ive been trying lots of different places like jobcentre, business link, inbiz, basically anyone i think may be able to help give me any help and advice thanks for the post mac

1. Sign off the benefit system.
2. register as self employed,
3. apply for working tax credits ( u have to be working more than 30 hrs a week, but if you set up self employed then you are at your computer working more than this because you are setting up, writing letters, doing research etc etc.
Working tax credits is about £51 per week, you will need to tell them you are not making any proffit yet as you have just set up on your own, when you get the tax credits paid weekly, you will be entitled to full housing benefit as long as you dont make a proffit over a certain amount. Do it, its worth it and will really help you out. Just call the tax credit people, they are very helpful.
good luck.

Also worth speaking to the princes trust as they often help people in this situation, I have a mate who is a full time carer but runs a website from home as long as he doesnt make too much he is fine, also worth remebering its "profit" that gets taxed and you ahve already spent ££££ so you are on a balance of -£3000 so you can earn £3k + Personal allowance, before you owe any tax you will need to pay Class1 NI though about £30 a quarter so not much.

Goodluck

Inform the council of your change in circumstance workwise. They will give you a form which basically asks you what your self-employed income will be.You don't have to fill it in until you have a better idea of what you'll be earning. So really this could be two/three months down the line. This is then reviewed by the Council every so often and your Housing Benefit is adjustded accordingly as to your earnings.

In short, declare low earnings to begin with and YES you will still get help with your housing payments AND council tax pro rata to your declared iincome.Do not worry about your housing payments for the moment, they will continue BUT do inform them of your self-employment.

Your UTR is your Unique Tax Reference number.Phone Inland Revenue and they'll send it you in the post.

cheers mate,
thanks for help this is what i was trying to get answers out the dole but as i am a carer they dont class me as unemployed so are reluctant to help i even asked if i gave up the carers would i then be eligible for help .at first i wont be taking a wage and will alredy have significant start up costs for tools, training ,books, van, insurances etc. i will get in touch with them as you say cheers for your help mate just need to get going ad finding it hard to get answers and help and hae received more help of people like yourself on this forum than any government agency cheers to all who have helped
