Hi everyone,

I have a bit of a disaster on my hands and I need some advice. Hope you can help us!

This morning we got up and the boiler wasn't working. No power at all. My boyfriend thought it could be the fuse so we took it out. I called my Mum for advice as we have never changed a fuse before but turns out she told us completely wrong.

It was a 3amp fuse we took out and stupidly we put a 13amp back in to test it. The boiler started up and we thought 'brilliant!' then it went BANG!

Have we totally broken it?? Will we have to get an electrician in to fix it?

We have tried putting other 3 amp fuses in that we found around the house but none have worked.

Does anyone know how much it is likely to cost us, we are in Surrey.

I would really appreciate some advice.

Thank you

Hi feanor,

I hope by it went bang that you mean the fuse in the Fused switch, & not the boiler:eek:

As you keep getting fuses blowing then it Sounds like you definitely need to have someone in to find the cause , If it is the boiler that is at fault you will need to get a gas safe (used to be corgi) registered gas fitter in, as only they are legally allowed to work on the boiler.

Some companies will charge a call out fee but a local tradesman out of Thompsons or the yellow pages mayjust charge for the time to rectify the fault.

Hi,

We aren't really sure whether it was the fuse or the boiler that went bang. I saw a blue spark at the front of the boiler so I guess it is somewhere inside the boiler?

What a nightmare! We are going on holiday next week and could so do without this!! :(

Thank you for replying.

It might help to know what was happening beforehand. Was boiler in use before? Is this the first time you using it for Central Heating? ... Could be the pump is jammed .... but famous last words but putting in a bigger fuse probably didn't do any more harm if it 'banging them out'

Anyway, which part of Surrey? I know a guy in Banstead and another in Hampton Court if it any help :)

as notsosmart said get a gas safe engineer to it asap, stand back and leave well alone , it may have blown the pcb board which are not cheap, depending on how old the boiler is, thats to be considered these days.
