Hello all, I am carrying out general works at a sheltered housing and one of the elderly residents has alzheimer's and keeping pulling her emergency bell instead of the pull chord to over come this I've fitted a sensor, then had the problem of her asking people visiting other residents to take the lamp out the fitting, so now I've changed the fitting to a bulk head (most visitors wont have a screwdriver to take the lamp out) but we still have the problem of her pulling the bell trying to turn the light off!!! She also keeps unplugging the fridge due to the noise,

obviously I can't remove the emergency pull chord in her bathroom, we're also trying to find things to make her life easier and keep her worrying to a minimum has anyone else had experience with this or any idea how to over come its?

Thanks in advance
Tom

Hi Tom.

I can't help but if you can confirm the answers to these questions others may be able to help:

Are you saying that there is both a cord-operated light switch and a cord-operated emergency switch in the resident's bathroom?

Is the bathroom shared with other residents?

Is the bathroom lockable by the resident?

How far is it for a carer to come to respond to an alarm?

Is the fridge in the residents room and is it for their use?

Good luck

Hi Tom, sounds like you have done what you can, she has dementia and needs constant care, I think fitting a pir to the light is a good idea, perhaps you can adjust the time so it shuts off after a few seconds and this way she will not have to worry about the light staying on, FWIW I too work in care homes and have seen many problems, I would put the ownus on the carers mate and try not to worry too much.

Work in a lot of these homes for Intercall, and this is really common.....even the staff call them button pushers. You can use neck pendents, and room controllers, with control and dim lighting slowly, as not to scare residents...but as Mark say there is very little you can do

We did start with the time in for a few min but she was in the shower and the light went out... She has a neck pendant but again she can't take it in the shower, cheers for the help

Neck pendents are usually water proof to 10m, as most falls occur in the bathroom, but is down to manufactures.
If you go onto Intercall website, you may get some ideas which could help.

there is no longer a pull cord for the light just for the emergency cord
it is a en suit room
the carer is in house but Is not full time,
the fridge is the residence just for milk ect
cheers
