Hiya, recently bought a house built in 1910,electrics were somewhat botched (rented to students) in the 90s). No doubt I'll be on here everyday annoying everyone with remedial electricity questions.

thanks in advance guys.

it would help if you posted your status- qualified spark/trainee/DIYer. then we can advise accordingly.

Ahhh sorry,very new to forums.
I'm a DIYer (first house). Not really any clue about electricity DIY. A lot to learn.

Where would I post advice? Specific socket ring main related questions?

well then. i'd advise you for anything other than swapping fittings, employ a qualified electrician. he/she will have the test gear to ensure that any work done is safe. no use saving a few quid then coming home to a pile of smoking ruins.

Good point,I was a subjective test engineer for Aston Martin and presumed plugs and fault finding would be similar to fault finding on an ecu, loom, airbag etc.
I guess employing a pro would be the best option.

the principal's the same but 12volts don't bite. in the auto trade you have diagnostic analysers. similarly we use testers costing around ÂŁ800 for fault finding and testing circuits.

It's only a few wires. What can possibly go wrong? apart from a horrible painful fiery death :)
Welcome aboard, testing for Aston Martin? You'll be a hit in the auto electrics forum

Haaaa.
i shall stick my head into the auto leccy thread. I'm sure someone will have a db9 with faulty TDC sensor/abs arrestor relay problems.

forgive my ignorance,I presumed this was a forum for dimwits like me struggling with wiring at home.
thanks for the response guys

They can still start fires though!
Years ago, my neighbour knocked on the door, 'Your car's on fire!', then he went back to hosing it down with his hosepipe he'd dragged across the street. :)

very true. some years ago i stopped behind a vw beetle that had a fire in the engine compartment. grabbed my 1 shot dry powder extinguisher and put it out for him. miserable sod said thanks very much, but then moaned when i asked him for a tenner to cover the cost of replacing the extinguisher.

some people are so ungrateful!
Saturday evening I was just leaving somewhere when I saw a guy struggling to start his car.
Being the nice guy I am, I stopped to see if he wanted help.
the battery was flat and a wire on the starter had broken.
I happened to have ring terminals and crimping pliers in my car so fixed the cable for him and jump started his car and got him going again.
ungrateful sod didn't even say thankyou or offer me anything at all.
end of a bell that he was.
if he ever happens to turn up at my garage, he will be having extra discreetly added onto his bill.
