I am originally a BT apprentice who spent 7 years repairing PMBX/PABX in Birmingham, a year on cable and two years in Mercury's fault control. I then did a BSc. in Biological Science and I.T. as I wanted to be a teacher but found the red tape a bit too much. I then worked in internal sales, audiology, Royal Mail sorting, Sainsburys warehouse and then did the telecommunications for Sinclair Collis.

When I ran out of telecomms work, I got a job on meter recerts with BMS where the promise was I could earn £400 a week, I got it but not without working Monday to Sunday 70 hours a week. I was offered a job with Metering Services on a lower rate of pay so went back to telecoms. I was then headhunted for an Onstream contract which became an East Midlands contract mainly fitting prepayment key meters. I left to work a data contract at the building of Terminal 5 at Heathrow.

A mate told me about First Utility and I applied for one of the first jobs in smart metering and there learnt three phase and CT metering. We were all made redundant when Onstream dissolved, and a job with BGlobal dissolved due to competition from G4S.

I have been out of work since November and the jobcentre have kindly got me a 17th Edition course next week which I hope will give me more options.

Any advice would be welcomed and thank you for letting me join,

Graham Morris
