Hi Guys, as the title says im new to here. im also looking for a lot of advice in what i can do to become an electrician.

After leaving school in 2000 i went to college and started a svq level 3 course in electrical installation, about 6 months into it i was offered a 4 year apprenticeship in electrical and mechanical engineering. multiskilled for the first 2 years then decide to go down the mechanical or electrical route. i chose the mechanical route which i enjoyed and im also very good at. anyway things never worked out going into my last year and for various reasons i never finnished my apprenticeship. i needed a job that paid better than apprentice wages then so had to move on. ive regretted it ever since but plugged away making reasonable wages for my young family.
i have a svq level 2 in engineering manufacture consisting of various electrical and mechanical units.
i also have a SQA National Certificate in Engineering practice which consists of various higher and intermediate units in electrical and mechanical.

im now wanting to get back into electrical work as i have ambition to work for myself.

any advice would be gratefull

ok, you need to start from scratch

You need to do a min of a Level 2 in Electrical Installation, then get your 17th regs done.
Then its highly recommended that you look at the inspection and testing of electrical installations.

Then you need register with an approved body under the compertant person scheme

Thanks for your reply nicholas hi to all of you thanks for the welcome,
does this mean being taking on as a mature apprentice with a company for another 4 Years. as i was thinking of going to college and doing an HNC in Electrical Engineering on a Part time basis, would this be benificial to me or just a waste of time?. What is the full list of qualifaications that you need nowadays to be classed as a competant electrician and be able to work for an employer or work self employed? and also am i able to do city and guilds qualifications even if im not working as an electrician or do you need to be employed as one?
sorry for all the question but im desperate to find out and dont want to do something that will be of no use to me

ive just been on my local college webpage,
they are doing the following city and guilds course for ÂŁ610. would this be of any use to me.
