Hello everyone just thought id say hi.

I'm leaving the army after 6 years and want to become an electrician i'm starting a course with able skills which is costing me ÂŁ8195 heres the link: JIB Gold Card long and short of it is i get my NVQ level 2/3 (3 after two work based assessments). inspection and testing also my 17th edition when i have done this i get to book AM2.

I have found someone to take me on for a while till i qualify and then i'm going to do PART P and register with a company can some one please go into detail about PART P and is it worth doing?

Can anyone give me some advice and recommend anything i should do.

Finally is there any tools and equipment i would need like chasers drills etc and any recommended brands?

Thanks in advance il look forward to your much needed responses.

Hello and welcome

May I ask,why were you not offered resettlement courses by the army instead of paying a small fortune for qualifications yourself ?

Before signing that check.investigate the route you are suggesting very carefully, you are taking a very big gamble with money that you earned giving us protection
In this industry at present there are many leeches preying on the likes of yourself,so chose very carefully before committing so much money

Quote from the link
Once working in the electrical industry, Able Skills will arrange site assessments in order for you to achieve C&G 2357 NVQ level 3 and finally, you will come back to Able Skills to undertake AM2 - See more at: JIB Gold Card

The words in bold above represent what will be by far your biggest obstacle

8 grand is a rip off! for about 2.5 grand you can do c&g2357 at your local college which includes NVQ3 and AM2 and will get you JIB electrician grade (gold card). To do this you have to get a job as a mate or labourer working in the trade while you study the theory and work towards and gain evidence to complete your practical portfolio. If you look closer at the course it tells you you still need to get a job in the trade to finish the course (and the practical part of the course). JIB approved status is only gained when you have been a JIB electrician for two years I believe.

It makes my blood boil these parasites ripping off fellow ex squaddies! Things never change do they! You leave a worthy profession like the army only to get $hat on by every corporate scumbag here in civvy street!

You need to get yer wits about you, and fast! It's a different world out here and every Tom, Dick and Harry is out there trying to con you! ÂŁ8k for a qualification you can get at a local college for ÂŁ4k just stinks of corporate greed!

I can personally vouch for Chichester College! A really great bunch there and voted number one college in Sussex too!

I wish you well mate, you're in my neck of the woods too so if you're ever stuck fella, I'm always on the end of the phone. I can't make any promises but you never know, I may be able to sling a bit of work your way.

It'll be a long hard slog, but if you're willing to learn then you'll get there in the end :)

Sorry I'm late for the party but I have to agree with the comments posted here. It sounds like a con to me. Yes you might get the qualification but there's no guarantee of work either. I hope the comments here haven't put you off your career choice but I do hope the forum guys have saved you a few quid :smoking:

Thanks for your responses I've already paid for the course which I start next month. The reason I'm paying that much is because I have 6 months to sort my life out and start getting paid an okay wage as I have a little boy and rent and bills to pay (so do we all :( ) plus the army are paying ÂŁ1500. I couldn't go back to college and do a whole apprentiship and be on rubbish money that's why i need to be qualified soon as possible I no I'm not going to get much experience but I'm a quick learner. The good thing is I'm doing this in the army's time march-june so I'm still getting full pay to October when I'm out.

But ur can anyone explain about part p and tell me what tools il need etc please.

Thank you all.

Oh dear, unfortunately you have done it all wrong, I wish you would have asked on here before parting with 8 grand, 8 grand, 8 grand, I can hardly believe it, as for part p, it is just a building regulation not an electrical qualification.
