Hi all, before i start, i apologise if this is in the wrong place :) im new to all this :p

Well hi, im new :) im called shaun :)

Ill start buy telling your abit about myself, im 19, have workin in the electrical industry since i were 14, working in the school holidays and that, when i left school, worked full time, and went to college and all that, as you do..

Up untill about a year ago, when i got laid off.

I still carried on at college and am now 2330 Level 3 qualified, and have booked to do my 2382 17th edition, and im thinkin about doin my 2391 Inspection and test.

Since i have done my L3, people have been asking me to do little jobs, like changing lights and so on, but now iv been asked to do a 3 story extention, but obv the problem is, i cant sign it off. Doing the work dont bother me, i have 100% trust in myself, just signing it off

Im thinking about setting up self employed (some may not agree with this, as im 19 and that, but its what i really wont to do..)

So the question is:

What do i need to do next to set up self employed, and start signing off my own work?

Do i really need to do my 2391 T+I?

Do i need to set up with a governing body i.e NICEIC etc..

Can i get some sort of grants? iv been told i can? but how do i go about doing this?

Any help will be appreciated!

Thanks in advance!

Shaun!

1. Google 'setting up business' and register as a sole trader on the HM customs and excise website. You will then be liable for your own tax and NI though, so read up on that first.

1a. Yes you're may be a bit young, but what makes you think you have any less basic business acumen than a 30 year old who hasn't done this before? I wish I'd set up on my own when i was... well a little bit older than you, but if it's what you want to do and you think you can do it.... why not. Do read up and really do your research first though, there are a lot of entitlements you will no longer get, and a lot more things you are responsible for.

2: No, you don't need 2391 if you're not doing PIRs and are only signing off your own work. You probably don't even need it for PIRs if you have L3.

3 - Yes, you'll join a part p scheme if you're smart. You'll have to get enough together to pay the 450 odd quid for memership, as well as enough for liability insurance and you'll need to own or rent a tester. If you don't join a body you'll end up paying a ridiculous amount to building control on each job. Your 450 will be made back after doing 3 jobs if you are't going through building contol, and you'll get some swanky logos and more wok due to the publics peace of mind on seeing the ELECSA/NIC/NAPIT logo.

4- Probably, due to you being young. Ask the job centre or the citizens advice bureau

Good luck.

Hello Shaun,

Welcome aboard.

In answer to (some of) your questions;

No reason at 19 why you can't set up on your own,but to be able to comply with part P you will have to either join a scam.., er sorry.. scheme provider, or notify your labc of the work to be done then register the completed work. (ok if you can pass on the costs or you are only completing a few jobs a year)

If you havn't done much in the way of test and inspection then maybe you could employ a local experienced sparks with test & inspection to assist in the wiring etc and then to sign off the Installation cert, in the meantime I would sign up for 2391 (a word of caution the final exam is not multiple choice and isn't a walk in the park)

Not experienced in getting Grants, but Sintra has good knowledge of setting up a new business and advises others to register for a free course (the name of which escapes me)

Good luck

Edit:Rocker beat me to it!
