I'll attach pics tomorrow when I go past again but this is one of those has to be seen to be believed jobs - but it's round the corner from us. My issue is that there are only 2 installers near this property and neither of us have done it but I'm worried that we'll be associated with it because our van is the only one with solar panels on it.

It's so bad I'm thinking about taking our MCS guy past it when he comes next week and ringing Building Regs.

I'm not one for grassing normally but this is truly hideous - I did think I could just put a poster in the village shop with some photos of what an install should look like andhope the locals draw their own conclusion ....

What does everyone else do?

To give you an idea of what it looks like picture this - a very old sunken slate roof with sandstone tiles on the bottom, 5 x 2 panels in landscape all fitted completely seperately ie 2 panels then maybe 200mm gap, another 2 panels another gap etc etc and because of the poor condition of the roof some of the panels are significantly higher than the others and all are in seperate groups of 2 - truly hideous!!

sounds like someone doing their first install with a kit that only came with 2m long rails.

I've got a few locally that I go past all the time that I swear I'm going to have to put a note through explaining what's wrong with their installation and offering to fix it.

there's 2 next to each other that actually literally overhang the gutter, which virtually guarantees they will be suffering from damp penetration through the walls IMO. Then there's loads where they've just left the rails sticking out from sheer lazyness.

I probably ought to find out who's done them and go and have a word or something, as it's stuff like this that brings the entire industry into disrepute IMO.

If you havnt done the job why are you concerned what people think and how can that installation be related to you.
People aren't bothered as they can't see what's wrong with it only other installers like ourselves

I think the problem is that appearances do count and the whole industry is tarnished by ugly installs. Of course, beauty is in the eye of the beholder but some jobs are hideous and damage public perception.

In effect, we are all "guilty by association".

it impacts on the public perception of the entire industry, and these are very visible installations on the main road about 2 minutes from our office.

and people definitely do take notices of some of these rubbish installations as we've definitely had a lot more customers recently checking that we're going to trim the rails and install it neatly than in the past, when I think people just took it for granted that this would happen.

I'm pretty sure we've also directly lost sales we've quoted on because of these sort of installs, as we've had a couple that I can remember from the last few months where one partner was really wanting to do it, but said the other just couldn't stand the look of solar panels, and it had caused blazing rows etc so they just had to leave it.

I doubt I'll actually get round to bothering to do anything about it, but they **** me off every morning on the way into work.

If I were a betting man that is the one thing I'd put my money on being said on almost every site visit:)
We did a thermal install a few years back in Littlehampton where I honestly thought the couple were going to start fighting. He wanted it, she didn't. It all turned out ok in the end.

Here you go - this is the finished article. I have to say it looks better on the photo than in the flesh, if you know what I mean!

The roof these are on looks a bit wobbly which didn't help them ,not so sure i'd like working off their scaffold either!

the scaff is really worrying let alone the nice clean lines of those lovely straight panels! would like to see the wiring for that one also.
