I didn’t want to put this in Chit Chat because I think it’s to important. The HS2 rail link (London / Birmingham) is under threat due to the NIMBY’s as per usual. It may spoil the views around Amersham and go through the constituencies of two Tory MP’s. As to the views, it’s got to be some of the most boring landscape there can be. The less said about the MP’s the better.
As to the impact on the landscape, all I would say is go to the peak district and look at the magnificent architecture our Victorian engineers created. Monsal Head viaduct adds to the grandeur of the dale. The two iron viaducts at Millers Dale are masterpieces. OK so I’m an engineer with a love of the countryside. But I’m also a pragmatist.
You’ll not hear me say this very often but the French had it right. If it’s for the good of the country it will get steam rollered through the planning stage. The TGV being a classic example of this. In the future it’s our kids that will get the benefit, short term there will be the construction jobs. There are planned extensions from HS2, this will be an on going project creating work for years to come.
With luck the Monsel Head viaduct will see rail traffic going over it. The savings for the Derbyshire quarrying industries would be huge, while at the same time relieving the roads. OK this is a separate subject to HS2 but one I’d fully back.
Shortsighted planning has been the death of this countries industry. Now there’s half a chance to redress things and what happens? Glass backed politicians cow-tow to the NIMBY’s.
Rant over for now.
Just don’t get me started on the planed extensions to the national grid, nuclear power…. There separate rants! But I’m in favour of them. Wind farms want scrapping a waste of money, I wouldn’t mind so much if WE built them.
