I didn’t want to put this in Chit Chat because I think it’s to important. The HS2 rail link (London / Birmingham) is under threat due to the NIMBY’s as per usual. It may spoil the views around Amersham and go through the constituencies of two Tory MP’s. As to the views, it’s got to be some of the most boring landscape there can be. The less said about the MP’s the better.

As to the impact on the landscape, all I would say is go to the peak district and look at the magnificent architecture our Victorian engineers created. Monsal Head viaduct adds to the grandeur of the dale. The two iron viaducts at Millers Dale are masterpieces. OK so I’m an engineer with a love of the countryside. But I’m also a pragmatist.

You’ll not hear me say this very often but the French had it right. If it’s for the good of the country it will get steam rollered through the planning stage. The TGV being a classic example of this. In the future it’s our kids that will get the benefit, short term there will be the construction jobs. There are planned extensions from HS2, this will be an on going project creating work for years to come.
With luck the Monsel Head viaduct will see rail traffic going over it. The savings for the Derbyshire quarrying industries would be huge, while at the same time relieving the roads. OK this is a separate subject to HS2 but one I’d fully back.

Shortsighted planning has been the death of this countries industry. Now there’s half a chance to redress things and what happens? Glass backed politicians cow-tow to the NIMBY’s.

Rant over for now.

Just don’t get me started on the planed extensions to the national grid, nuclear power…. There separate rants! But I’m in favour of them. Wind farms want scrapping a waste of money, I wouldn’t mind so much if WE built them.

It seems we are in agreement.:D

London - Birmingham in around 50mins can only benefit everyone that relies on commuting to & from work or shipping of goods etc, as it may free up some of our totally overcrowded roads.

As you mention, the jobs created can also be a benefit, as long as it's British workers that build it.

All for it in principle but, we'll no doubt go about it in a very British way and it will cost billions more than projected to complete and you'll need to take out a second mortgage to pay for a return fare from London to Birmingham

We have a reasonable number of clients that will be catastrophically affected by this , I don't think you will need to worry about having that rant for to long ......

sounds like a great project, wonder which of the big boys will get that work,,,,,lets face it our roads are crap the railways over crowded and running on track the victorians left....

im all for New Rail links... turn the clock back to dr beeching and 1960's every town and city was linked by rail of some sort..! be it main line or branch line...! i can also speak volumes in the north east where in durham nearly ALL villages were also connected via rail due to haulage of coal from the pits..

imagine if that network of interlinked rail and bus travel had been utilized to maximum and maybe streamlined to give a LOCAL service to the areas... we would not have such a high dependency on road use.. i for one would have been able to get to both sunderland, newcastle and hartlepool had the rail link in my village not been removed under the beeching axe.

i say pick a nice straight line and build the fastest quickest track you can get between citys..! dont diddle daddle around valleys and hillsides or follow the route of the 1900 railway ....!!
