I'm sorry if someone asked this before but I've came to a crossroad With my work, what to do next, I'm looking at doing the HNC / HND course. Please could someone give me generally advice on how hard the courses are, what involved and what job I can get at the end?! Thanks

Hi Dave
There is a very similar recent post to yours. But anyhow, I completed the HNC a few years ago. I done
2 years day release. I found the maths quite hard and that was after doing the ONC. Also had to do quite a lot of
swotting up outside of college. I would say that the maths that is required to pass the 236, pt1 and pt2 is not quite enough to prepare you for the HNC. If you feel that your maths may be lacking I recommend "Maths, A students survival guide" by Jenny Olive. Anyhow, definitely a good qualification to have. Good luck if you take the plunge.

The course is very hard, and the kind of jobs generally will be in maintenance with a good firm, or design if that's what interests you. Where I apprenticed ALL of us had to pass HNC as part of our apprenticeship, and now I'm housebashing because I got sick of shift work. :)

The HNC is a lot of work and the maths is a killer and forms a major part of a lot of the units. Like all education it is well worth doing. Career wise it will lift you to applying for jobs in management, design or electrical engineering, to name a few. My experience has shown that you will be higher regarded with a HNC and experience to someone with a degree without experience.

I did HNC and D in Building Services Engineering, i learned a lot, but ferk me the maths was mind blowing and total waste of time, its bums on seats to keep academics in a teaching job for the most part, the guy who taught us electrical modules couldnt even get BS7671 right but argue with him at your peril , not being as knowledgeable at other services it made me wonder just how good the others were, that said i can now contribute to loads of subject areas and offer non electrical solutions where it is the right choice.

I'm no natural academic and doing assignments every night for 3 years wasnt fun, and in my line of work got me no extra cash and no extra respect from management, depends how old you are and what your domestic situation is lets just say my other half at the time couldnt do with the amount of time it took.

Some careful thought needed.

HNC got me a job as a surveyor , about 30K top - so set up company to supplment wage lol
