jenions

which are the best:
the normal type
bi metal?
carbide grit?

loads of different types. i used to the normal type but looking to buy a set so wonderng if the others are better

Bosch Powerchange ones, I would not use any other, only down side is they grip so much that you have to hold the drill damned tight!
or risk breaking wrist and pilot drill there are also variety of types available HSS wood bit carbide ect AND pilot drill is interchangeable and easily replaced

I use Starret in 20 and 25mm. The Bosch ones are far to soft in those sizes for metalwork IMO. Anything above those sizes I use an alsortment of Starret and Bosch with the powerchange bit. One thing to remember with the Powerchange is that the cutting edge of the drill sits below the cutting edge of the holesaw. If you're cutting stainless (or any other material that is prone to hardening due to heat), they can wonder.

No mate. It's a Bosch bit lol. Used them for over three years now. Check where the drill cutting edge meets the holesaw cutting edge. They overlap somewhat.

Tried the new Starret multi-purpose TCT hole saws at the Starret stand, ELEX/Toolfair2011, Exeter. Absolutely awesome performance, 120mm diameter hole in 22mm chipboard in 10s set-up to finished hole using 18v Nimh Bosch, no heat build up, clogging or binding due to the large chip clearances. Repeated in MDF 15s again no heat, clogging or binding. Immediately bought all my most used sizes at an amazing deal price.

The starett tct hole saws are really good for wood n mdfLenox are good for metal .tho I do rate the Bosch power change stuff as well

I love my Bosch PowerChange bits, they're great :) Their only failing is when you break the ball bearing that retains the pilot bit, you end up having to buy a whole new arbor.

I got my last 2 sets from Aldi, about a fiver a set, had them years now and still going strong, sharp as the day i got them, no problems going through steel enclosures or plaster etc. I do have the odd starett ones for the sizes not in the Aldi set, and to be honest they dont perform any better.

Cheers...........Howard
