there are many ways to home automate depending on what you want to do
i work with plc's, relay systems, sensors, indicators, and so on.
a new approach is to use the arduino, and raspberry pi. both can be programmed using java, c++, python, and more
my own pet project is an automated zone temperature control (plc operated) for my coal stove.

home automation can be done in many ways depending on your choice.
primary concern in planning is to protect your control system plc, raspberry pi, or plcc (computer)
i highly recomment the use of ssr's
Solid-state relay - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
these are the type i use.

but there are many other manufacturers you can use throughout the world.

second properly plan out what and how you want to control things.
and seek advice from others as seeing a plan from a different perspective can help you to make it safer, more efficient, and dependable.
i will write out a more detailed explanation to attach later if needed
I work with automation all the time and my own home is semi automated for the assistance of my wife as she is hearing impared

Hi guys everything must be control from iPhone, android or pc and if they link with a main control unit from the house. Eg I've seen a guy with creston home automation touch screen unit linked to a iPhone which can be used either when connected to wifi or roaming.

you might need to tell us how good you are with computer systems and designing stuff (as apposed to installing it). what gnuuser is talking about is great but it will be a hell of a learning curve if you want to do it that way and make money on an install.

My view (and others might say differently) is that getting lighting/security/power/AV etc all in one system you are either going to be spending a lot of money or a lot of time on integration issues.
