Home automaton/control monitoring

I wish to control/monitor status of many devices at home.
I have wifi devices that can be turned off and on. But I cannot tell if my garage door is closed or open.
I have a wifi thermostat for my home but cannot control my pool heater.
What interface do I need to bring my smart home together?

It all depends on how much control/flexibility you want. There are many controls manufacturers but only a few are really economical in a domestic environment.

If you can give a bit of a list of the items you would like to control/monitor I could give you some better advice and possibly help you out with it.

I work with building controls for a living so should be able to help.
