2 weeks after i placed and ad on yell.com i've had 3-4 advertising people contact me but no other work, tonight i got a call from homeserve saying they had an electrical emergency and would like me to attend asap and sort it out for them and then invoice them directly for it. i was sceptical at first and was about to hang up but i got the old ladys phone number from them and called her up to arrange to go and see it, basically theres been a leak in the bathroom and the light below has stopped working. i'm going to see it tomorrow, and then i'll invoice homeserve and see what happens. it's only 5 mins away and i'm not busy so I might aswell have a go i reckon.
should i fill out an EICR just for the circuits relavent to the room below the bathroom (ring and lights i'm guessing..) and leave that with the customer?

well you dont know whats involved completely till you get there. but could be a matter of letting ti dry out few days/weeks or recabling, its all ???? but why not give it a go, hopefully easy one to test the water..

Tell them that because water has gotten into the electrics it is highly recommended that they have a full EICR as there could be some underlying problems caused by the water. Also see what CU is there and go down the route of new CU (if needed) and bonding

well if theres an old wylex re-wireable board with no RCD and no bondig then I feel it's my duty of care to explain this to the customer and see if i can get myself some more work:yesnod:. but i don't think this is something i can try and get out of homeserve, theres no way the leak in the bathroom caused that and i think i'd have a job explaining that to them! i'll let you know how i get on

I see what you are saying, but all you can do is recommend they get it changed but there is no need to get any work done if all you are just checking the electrics. Now if you were carrying out any new installation work then yes bonding has to be in place, but only what you install has to be RCD protected.

Surely a MWC if you have to carry out specific repair work? Some of it may even end up notifiable.

the customer is not paying you homeserve are, i would ask them how far do they want you to go with it as they are paying!!

yeah they said that the customer has requested a visit asap and i was to call straight away and sort out a time, but in reality after speaking with her she was not bothered and said i could come at my earliest convienience which is tomorrow

minor works you say, so what if this happens, the light fitting is knackered and i replace it, i fill out a minor works certs and record the test results on there leave that with the customer and notify the job via elecsa

but if there no RCD and in-adequate bonding then i have to fix that before i can replace the light fitting? so i would have to call homeserve and explain that to them get the go-ahead and then bash on with the job.

Arent we all juming the gun a bit with talk of CU's , rcd's & eicr's ?? lol

bit of water in light escalates into ÂŁ400 of upgrades lol.

10min to dry out fitting & wiring , ins res test cable from switch , check bonding , jump in van.
MWC ? not needed even if changing light.
Notify ? not needed for like for like replacement even if in special location.
No rcd ? well youre not there to fit sockets so again not needed.
Bonding not correct ? record it in your job report to homeserve.

If you bump up small repairs into massive jobs you end up with no better reputation than British Gas.

Used to do call outs for B Gas, just wanted the fault sorted/made safe and minor works cert. Put any deficiencies on cert/invoice. Get homeserve gaffer tel no. before you go. If dangerous/poor unearthing call them, don't touch.
