As my old trusty paint stripper heat gun has packed up, can anyone recommend a gas cartridge one. I bought one of those that use a zippo lighter from ebay, and could never get it to work.

Was gong to buy a HellermannTyton E4500, till I found out the price of £117.

Anybody got any sensible suggestions? Or should I just get a blowtorch from B&Q?

I use my Portasol pro soldering iron. It even comes with a clip on protector to protect the surrounding area.

PS . Around £85.

Yes , it has a tube attachment that turns it into a heat gun; no flame just hot air.
It also has piezo ignition, plastic knife , high flame torch , it will solder copper pipe fittings and is one of the best soldering irons you can buy.

Try the CPC website for the micro therm IRODA gas torch - amazing little thing that uses a standard lighter and has a heat deflector for accurate work. Only 10.99 - I'm waiting for a spare 10.99 before I get one believe it or not! Unless anyone can review its efficacy then looks like a keeper.

Set is like this. That is the hot air attachment that is on it.

I bought one of these a few years ago. I found it absolutely awful.

Not all standard lighters work in it.
Even with the right lighter in it it was quite temperamental.
If used for too long the whole thing smelt like it was going to burn.
After a while (few months) it fell apart.

It 'looks' perfect for heatshrink but it really isn't.

i coil some scrap 1.5mm bare copper wire round the heatshrink, then connect the ends to a 240V supply. fed by a 16A MCB and RCD protected, i then switch on through an immersion heater timer bought from azamon at a silly low price, made in china, set for 3 minutes, time enough to imbibe of a pint of glorious hobgoblin. if the heatshrink survives and passes IR and continuity tests, wrapp it round with 2 layers of insulating tape (as per manufacturers instructions from B&Q), then bung it into a void , never to be seen again.

That's a good method now that copper is cheaper. So is it a pint to a joint. I would hate to go against the instructions.

I had one but it didn't last long. The ignition failed.

The mini heat guns with lighters are OK for an emergency heat shrink, they do work, slowly, but are not long lived.
I use a paint stripper heat gun for heat shrink about £20, but do require a power supply.
You can get cheap and cheerful gas soldering kits for about £20 and this is my lack of power supply choice for heatshrink.
