house extension and smokes

Hi all
just finishing 1st fix on house extension do i need to fit smokes ?? On a house rewire i have done but do you need to on just a extension ??? only ask as its not mentioned on the drawings ( plans)

yes you do. extrension/new build same. see the little green book "electricians guide to the building regulations".
in my humble opinion, its a question that hardly needed to be asked.
smokes save lives..............simple.

I've been led to understand that any home that is altered structurally must have interconnected smokes. If wiring a pain , EI radio series very good. I only spec the lithium EI series, 10 year battery and all that good stuff! RF base so no interconnect wiring involved.

sorry did not make it very clear !!

original house has battery smokes do new smokes have to be on mains or can we just fit normal battery ones or do they have to be taken from a light fitting and interlinked via radio when not putting in a dedicated circuit for them

As far as I can ascertain, if a property is structurally altered, walls moved, extension anything where the property ceases to look the same as it did, interlinked smokes (or fire etc) are necessary. They don't have to be hard wired but if one goes off they all have to go off. There are distance limitations from habitable areas from detectors. TLC.co uk has some info , I think
