Hi everyone,

I'm new here so I hope I'm posting in the right section.

I've served my apprenticeship with and currently work for a housing maintenance company as an electrician, which I ve been doing for a while now.
So I mostly do domestic repairs, kitchen and bathroom refurbs and a lot of EICR's. This work is fine but I'd like a change, the idea of working in commercial or industrial, or anything other than what I'm used to is interesting to me at the moment.

What worries me is that my lack of experience in these areas will mean no one will employ me and I'll have no option but to stay domestic.
I'm not completely new to this kind of work but I have nothing worth noting on my CV.

So who else has found themselves in my position, and what advice would you give?

Thanks for reading

Happy new year!

Join the TA as a reservist electrician in one of the REME linked reserve regiements , it will do wonders for your cv and open many doors. you also get to run around one weekend a month doing cool things. Also the Army will pay for any future training you need and give you all sorts of permissions on your driving licence all for free!!
its not exactly linked directly to being a non domestic spark but its just an idea... they are also paying around ÂŁ2.3k if you join as a reservist at moment !!

Have a walk down your street late at night with a few tools and start tampering with the street lighting .you will learn on the job and it will enrich your life immeasurably . In no time at all you will be able to bill yourself as a street furniture specialist

My friend was a domestic electrician through and through but took a dive and decided to try his hand at an engineering factory doing reactive maintenance, shadowing one of the old boys there; the long and short of it was that he was fed up of doing the same as you and walked into our local industrial estate with his C.V and just started posting, he got a placement with this company and honestly it sounds dreadful at the minute - ridiculous night hours and not to mention some days he spends 12 hours sat doing nothing because the machines haven't failed, just sat drinking coffees and the occasional nap (I can imagine it sounds like a dream job to some of you).

But this is just the first rung on the ladder of moving over industrial I suppose so maybe give that a try at your local industrial site if you have one; bear in mind that he did say that the first few weeks are hell in comparison to what he was used to but he's settling...

Where are you in Cornwall as do a list of who you would want to work for as well as close enough to travel to and work your way through the list.

If you are near to Falmouth any jobs going at the Coastguards base?

Just moving to a different branch,of the same trade, would not guarantee excitement. You could be equally thrilled or bored,in all areas of the job.

Maybe, have a good think about what you love, and hate,in the job,and envisage an arrangement, where you would feel more of the former.

Do not just assume, that new means better...or has Mr.Trump not shown us anything? ;)
