There are different adaptors you can buy that will incorporate the plug on the appliance which will give you your earth connection, check European adaptors on Amazon etc. (other companies are available) I'm mostly loath to use adaptors on slightly higher rated appliances but might be the only way around it because cutting the plug off and fitting a UK 3 pin one will almost certainly invalidate the manufacturers warranty.
Make sure you buy a top quality adaptor if that's what you are going to do as there is an awful lot of cheap inferior quality stuff out there. Always get a fused type.
Thanks for the replies. Really helpful. Until I obtain an adapter or fit a UK plug is it considered dangerous to use? I understand that not every county uses an earth on their sockets for example USA.
One more thing what is the polarity on this plug? Same as UK or could it still be "live" when switched off?
Where can I find out if an earth is needed? There's a metal contact and female socket on the plug itself. If they use the same system as the UK - ie a plastic prong in the earth position of low current items like phone chargers for example. If it didn't require an earth, presumably there wouldn't be metal earth contacts?
The warranty will not be void if you change the mains plug.
What would you do if the plug got damaged? Throw the machine in the bin??
Many appliances even have a section on how a replacement plug should be wired if it is changed.
Unless I'm going round the bend, both the schuko plug on the appliance and the socket of the adaptor have earth contacts at both top and bottom. Are you sure, the earth contact for the German plug is at the bottom and the earth contact on the other side of the adaptor is at the top.
Ok, so you COULD plug it in upside-down, but you can plug it in the right way up!Unless I'm going round the bend, both the schuko plug on the appliance and the socket of the adaptor have earth contacts at both top and bottom.
Which is why appliances made for the european marked are designed to be connected either polarity. Many sockets only have the earth terminal marked, the line connections left blank.Ok, so you COULD plug it in upside-down, but you can plug it in the right way up!
You've not been involved in an insurance /warranty claim before then?Anyone competent can fit a mains plug. Bosch are not going to want video evidence that you paid a qualified spark to come and do it.
And it's a much better solution than an adaptor.

The USA uses earthed sockets, though they will accept 2 pin plugs. Thanks for the replies. Really helpful. Until I obtain an adapter or fit a UK plug is it considered dangerous to use? I understand that not every county uses an earth on their sockets for example USA.
One problem with most adaptors is that the Live and Neutral are reversed when you plug it into the adaptor, because the 13amp plug fits in upside down, therefore the fuse in the 13amp plug is on the Neutral side.
Yes I know there isn’t per say, but from my research some manufacturers have some limitations, Bosch is one.Yes I have. More than once.
And there is nothing wrong with replacing a damaged mains plug.
Same as there is nothing wrong with hard wiring appliances to FCUs
I have been told that the problem is most of the service centres are not owned or operated by Bosch, the owners of the centre pay Bosch to represent them and have to foot the bill for warranty claims unless it's a recall, if you did not buy the item from that centre they will be very reluctant to help.
Only on here can such a simple task as suggested by @DPG in #2 turn into 27 odd posts?

Only if carried out by a qualified electrician. Anyone?![]()
Just playing Devils advocate, if you have a read of my other thread. If there's a warranty claim, you may be required to prove whose replaced the European plug, not just 'Dave' from down the pub.No. By anyone competent to fit a plug. It is well within competent DIY or handyman scope. If it is done correctly there will be no issue.
How does anyone know who fitted the plug anyway?
To the OP - get someone competent to fit the plug, or do it yourself if you feel you are able to safely. If anyone from Bosch ever says 'who fitted that plug?', the correct answer is 'a qualified electrician sir'.
I really hope common sense has prevailed here already though!!

Feel sorry for these 'Daves'.
Just use Maxvell Howsen ?youse all missed the critical issue. will the machine work if you use coffee that is not German? " Ve have vays of making you perc".
