Lads on your quotes do you list cost of:

Materials & labour then total?

or just a total of labour and materials combined? So customer can't see cost of material and hourly rate?

The price as quoted, never breakdown as the only reason a customer requests this is so they can systematically screw your profit down to a minimum, also you are supplying a material list allowing anyone to easily undercut you

All depends on the job and customer, mine could have under the description like:

Supply and fit 70W mercury floodlight light with photocell to DB2, inclusive of cables and fittings to centre of west face building for car parking as discussed.

I never give a full details as nikmet says they dont need to know too much, other than what, where and cost.

Allways worth including 'all work to bs7671 and full certification will be provided for the work carried out', that way it can put a spanner in the works of any cowboy with no idea how to test /certificate from undercutting you. Despite what you read on here, the majority of good clients would much rather have a good job with full certification of the work, rather than sleepless nights after a cash in hand cowboy has dissapeared into the sunset :-D

I word mine "All work to be carried out in accordance with all current legislation, BS7671:2008 certificate, and Building regulation Part P notifications to be issued on completion"

I made the mistake of being transparent in a quote this week. Bloke seemed genuine listed labour and material costs. Hasn't got back to me. I don't usually quote like this but business advisor advised to do so for small domestic jobs never again. He's probably showing every spark on the borough my quote and hourly rate. Bad, bad advice

weve all done it mate, not a problem as long as we learn from our mistakes, some want to know every detail on how the job will be carried out where to clip and how to install etc, im very vague when explaining as its clear they want this info so they can install it themselves afterwards......

If you make it too vague it usually ends in a moan when the clients try it on .
Too detailed and it gets shopped about to the cheapest cowboy around
I usually split it into labour, material and vat .no hourly rate on show
