How do you test for ring or radial? | on ElectriciansForums

Discuss How do you test for ring or radial? in the Electrical Course Trainees Only area at ElectriciansForums.net

a ring will have 2 Live cables in the MCB. with all L's, N's and E's of the circuit dissed.check for end-end continuity.

Also be aware that if it is a RFC then there is the possibility of spurs being present on the circuit. Have a look in Appendix 15 of BS7671. :)

If i was adding points to a RCF i would always try and keep it a Ring rather than spur.

Was in an older 3bed house a few months back, no lables on CU
turned out each of the 3 bedrooms had their own radial circuit, one circuit in it's own 16A MCB and the other 2 connected in another.

I went away thinking, you can assume nowt without a good old nose around.

That is only 2 circuits as a circuit is defined by the ocpd not the number of conductors connected to it

I’ll be straight with you Dave, sheer ignorance !
I saw 2 2.5mm2 brown cables coming out of the top of an MCB and thought Ring FC.

Oddly on one house I went to that had been "sorted out" electrically at great expense to the owner, I found that both "rings", that were non continuous, had been "fixed" by putting them on 16A breakers.
So there were two conductors in each breaker and if they had been correctly installed would have been ring finals.
Whilst admittedly this is possibly safe, I did feel that solving the underlying problem would have been better.
