hi folks been a while since i posted on here. been asked if i can replace some 500w tungston floodlights and have beeen thinking of using hid lighting cos they where having problems with the pir's on the ones they got at the moment has anyone got any ideas on any other sorts of light i could use?

Are you still wanting pir control as this is a limiting factor due to the warm up times of discharge lighting its not a good solution.

i have notice this when reading the blrub on them. do you have an idea of wat i could use insdead of metal halide/ 500w tungston?
To be honest your choices are very limited if they require high level of flooding, what you need to do is convince them of the efficiency and running costs of the metal hallides but explain the control system will need to be through a time clock instead.
Its all a site dependant issue whether alternate control systems would suit this site so cant comment too much with limited info.

If it's instant light you need then it's hard to beat the tungsten types so why not leave the tungsten lights in place and just replace the PIRs with decent quality stand alone units since it's the PIRs that seem to be the problem.

You could always have a combination.

We have done installations before where you put in some low energy fittings as well as Metal halides. That way you get a certain amount of instant light but then shortly you will get the full monty of Metal Halides.
Dont forget though that metal halides are slower to warm up from being warm than when they are cold

These dont give anything like the lighting effect of a 500w halogen lamp and with respect to the lamps they are about equivalent to 150w lamps also their warm-up period to full brightness means they are not suitable for pir control as ive mentioned before discharge lighting isnt suitable for pir detection control.:)

I have never actually tried them just saw them in wholesalers.
