I'm 22 ambitious and commited to this trade. I started in this trade in 2008, have done various installation work and maintenance with 3 seperate companies 1st two firms went into administration while i was working for them and was made redundant both times. All big firms, I'd like start up and ge out on my own, but would you reccomend this in the current climat? and what tips could you advice me?

there's work out there. it's just a matter of getting it. if i knew the magic formula, then i would not have such a ridiculous forum post count.LOL.

Best time to start up....in a recession that is....think about it: you start small and get enough work to just "tick over"......then when it picks up you will be ready and you wont have a bank manager on your back moaning because you have got too big too quick....banks dont like that..............

I'm 22 also, and went self employed at the beginning of 2011 after completing my apprenticeship.

It was the best move I've made. The work is out there if you actively go looking.

I found the best way to gain business is to go and talk to letting agents with your business cards, as they always have plenty of maintenance work needs doing, and to post flyers to local houses. Everyone likes a local electrician, and most people are willing to give somebody young the job providing they are confident and friendly etc.

Providing people are impressed with your work, word travels quick, i have managed to build up a business mostly off recommendations and am now very busy.

Go for it!

Go For it! Just ensure that you have enough cash to survive the first few months at least and just be careful who you work for.
Well i would say the trick here is not to APPEAR to be too eager annd in search of the work........potential clients like anyone else can/will pick up on that one.......watch the pounds come of that quote and the time to pay go up............

Calculate what you need to earn to keep yourself running and keep food on the table then what ever you make after that is profit to put back in your business. Been said many times but if your reliable do a good job work will keep coming...

Just remember without risk you dont get any further.

have a think what your overhead costs will b to get started, tools van etc etc
then work out your running costs for per week.you will be surprised how much it is i tell ye.then work out your hourly rate /day rate from that .oh n don't b doing consumer unit changes for 150 quid just to get work as well.best of british
