Hi, my name is Andy and I am 15 next month.
I' am in year 10 at my school and go to m.i.t every friday I am currently training to get a level 2 diploma in plumbing and electrical engineering/installation. I am hoping to become an apprentice in electrical installation/engineering when I leave school when I get the apprenticeship I will be going to m.i.t once a week every week to train level 3. I was just wondering how much I will earn whilst training level 3. My mother said "I will probably have to work 9 to 5 or 7 to 3". Could I please get some help with better understanding how much I am likely to earn 'annually' and what times I will most likely be working between.
Other information: I live in England, Surrey (Near Hampton Court Palace)

Thank you.

apprentice would start on probably ÂŁ4.14 an hour for the first year, rising to ÂŁ6.10 in the second year and ÂŁ8.84 in the 3rd, this is with a decent JIB company. Getting an apprenticeship is really difficult at the moment and you would be wise to start looking around/ offering work experience now, I don't think any college you are doing now would enable you to enter an apprenticeship at a stage 3, the full time course is a different one to the apprenticeship.

Your wages may be dictated by your college scheme providers and what union they are under, its hard to say when you haven't yet got an apprenticeship or started level 3, you need to talk to colleges providing these courses, it could also be influenced by the company who provides your hands on apprenticeship ..... what ever you earn learn very quickly you mother is already arranging your board payments ;) and general work hours are 8-5 with lunch and possibly a few breaks.

The OP may be going into the Electrical Engineering side of the field a different ball game hence my previous post as it may not offer the same wage structure as an Electrician apprentice set-up and the expected wage when fully qualified will be better than you standard sparky.

I would say you would probably work 37 hours a week basic with a JIB company, 8.30 till 4.30, but hours vary a fair bit between differnet jobs if you are a contacting sparky, you may well even end up on nights or split shifts on some jobs as well as evening/weekend work, although for a decent company, this would be at overtime rate (time and a half)
My advice to you would be to start looking for a good large company who regularly take apprentices on, they generally offer fair pay, good training, a good range of differnet jobs and good job stability which is especially important whilst you are training.
You can start your search by checking your PM's

It’s far too early to look at potential earning.
Please, please, do not believe the figures the training companies will tell you.

Concentrate on getting good grades in subjects you will need in the real world.

For real money go for (turf) accountancy.

If he's got any sense he will.

Agree 100% with Tony here, get into a factory/proper apprenticeship type scheme as you will pick up far more than just doing an installation apprenticeship as sadly istallation is getting more and more dumbed down by the day and the quality work that was done years ago with conduit bending, pyro etc is being phased out as firms attempt to save money.

Try and go multiskilled if possible as this opens even more doors.

Look into opito if you fancy a career in oil&gas good wages then mush.

The lads only 14. Hardly started to the road to any qualifications.

By the time he’s reached 20/21 he’ll be doing something totally different. Performing arts, or fashion design will seem so much more enticing by the time the “advisors” have finished.

Ha ha ha yeah I know where your coming from.

we had something called JIG-CAL when I was in school and you put in your likes and dislikes etc then it gave you a career that most suited your skillset.

at the time we all thought it was a bit suspicious that we were all either going to be teachers, coppers, firemen or working for the civil service but we went with it as this marvellous new invention.

imagine my surprise 19 years later and my boy does exactly the same thing,in the same school and it also comes out that he's best suited to becoming a copper!!

Very suspicious, apparently most of them in his year were told the army represented the best career path for them?

industries short of men at the time?

who knows!!!!

Andy. Forget the money. It's not about just money. You are learning a trade. You will earn decent money if you put the effort in but don't expect rockstar wages for a good few years.

You will gain more than money can give you by learning a trade. The money comes eventually.

Have to agree with that.

ive been unemployed once since I started my apprenticeship and actually could still be employed by my original company if I'd decided to move to the Bridgend plant.

id say average factory spark around ÂŁ30k basic on shifts and most likely ÂŁ40k with reasonable overtime.

living in the place ÂŁ50k but that's pretty much 12hr days,Saturdays/Sundays etc.

in a big firm like ford/Nissan/Sony add ÂŁ10k to each rate.
