I am about to be asked how old the wiring is in a victorian house.I know you had to use the new colours from about 2006. when did rcd come in. mcbo. new plastic consumer units about the same time as rcd. sockets were squarer 20 yrs ago. any other tips on dating wiring. this house appears to have had everything else updated but not the wiring.

Take a look at the wiring, is it: PVC, VIR, Lead sheathed or Even varnished cambric. Normally an easier way to eatimate age than looking at fittings, properties are more likely to have fitting or CU changes before wiring.

Tinned stranded...usually early 70s.....often no cpc in lighting circuits.....or theres vir....black rubber....again no cpc and the insulation on this can be shot at the ends.....although funnily enough...is often ok along its length.....

Good idea: Some of our members are even old enough to remember Varnished Cambrick.(Don't mean myself obviously)

You’ll be getting a clip around the ear young un.

That aside yes a photo is the way, otherwise we're just guessing.

Photo,s of:
Fuse board (open).
Any cable terminations you can safely get to with out disturbing anything.
Switches and sockets.

It’s important not to disturb anything otherwise you’ll find yourself with more problems that you bargained for if the insulation crumbles.

Corporal punished was allowed in schools, it’s about time it was brought back. There’s a couple of deserving cases I can think of at the moment.

If the installation has a RFC, then you can be fairly certain that the RFC was installed after 1945 (could have been two radial circuits joined together).
