Work I have been doing as part of my PAT testing has been changing fuses, replacing plugs and replacing lost bolts on appliance covers. I have also replaced a flex that was damaged. Was talking to a PC repair engineer today about PAT testing and according to him I am fine doing the PAT testing but cannot do any repairs because I am not a qualified electrician. When I asked him what he meant, he said I need an electricians registration card (?) to show I am a qualified electrician before I can change a plug. He also reckons my insurance is null and void because I do not have this registered status. He also reckons I can't do any commercial installation work because, again, I am not a qualified electrician.
I can't work out what registration card he is on about. I know there is a JIB card for contractors, and NIC/Elecsa/Napit registration required to do Part P work on domestic property. I can understand a company being careful about who they use to do electrical work for them by asking for evidence of qualifications and competence, but was not aware of it being illegal, or making insurance null and void. Any ideas on what he is referring to? He did refer to this situation being 'since last April...'
