How recognised is 17th Edition Qualification in the industry?

Hi, Im new to the forum and I was just wondering how recognised the 17th Edition qualification was in the electrical industry and whether doing it is worth my time.

I have SOME previous experience in Electrical installation (college course) but that was a while ago and I've decided to get back into it and give it my all.

I was checking out some of the courses on electacourse where you revise at home and then go and sit an exam in your own time at a designated exam centre. Is this definitely something I should think about doing or will it be a waste of time?

The JIB, most of the job adverts and I believe all of the self certification schemes require the 17th.
Many job adverts also seem to want the 2391 as well.

If it's city & guilds 2382 then it's universally recognised, so definitely worth doing.
It's not that difficult - it's basically a test on getting information out of a book.

Agree with spin and novus , but what ever you do dont go down the Part P qualification because its not realy a qualification waste of time and money , go for the 17th edition then as spin has said go down the 2391 route to ,if youve not got alot of experiance then pop to your college and get your self on an installation course these normally include the 17th edition , they also do practical as well so gets you set up for the industry

To be honest in the industrial sector I don’t think the 17[SUP]th[/SUP] is very relevant. In my last job the “BOSS” decided we should all have the necessary piece of paper. So we all sat through some house basher going on about 1[SUP]st[/SUP] fixes, 2[SUP]nd[/SUP] fixes etc. my comment about if you can’t fix it first time you shouldn’t be in the job didn’t go down well. What the hell a maintenance electrician needs to know about wiring caravans I don’t know.

But it seems to be the bandwagon to be on, even if the employer doesn’t know which wagon he’s on.


As for inspection and testing!

We had a company approach us about doing PIR’s, so the “BOSS” asked me about it. OK get them to send a rep and I’ll give him a quick tour around to see what they’re taking on. I only took him in to one cable chamber under the distribution substation. Poor lad near fainted, 50 years of chopping and changing things around to suit the plant as it evolved.
When asked about testing procedures it turned out he didn’t know what a Ductor was, how he intended to test ¼ of a mile of 400mm singles without one I don’t know.

Never heard from them again!
