Hi, just wondered if you experienced lads can help me out. I live in a house and rent privately, and since I moved in the shaver light in the bathroom(on the wall above the sink) has had no casing on. I reported it in May when I moved in and the agency have done nothing to fix it. Now I mentioned this to my tutor at college who(without seeing it) thinks that the exposed wires shouldnt be in the open in the bathroom of all places. The wires are sheathed with white covering into a block terminal thing where the line and neutral meet and go into the light itself. I have mentioned it to the agency like I said, they said the are investigating its need for attention and have been since May so do I make a fuss about safety or is it fine for this?
I am studying level 2 and obviously common sense makes me think that this should be covered but I want advice off professionals as I feel it may make me look silly kicking up a fuss if they wont fix it. Thanks.

It needs to meet IP2x to satisy basic insulation principles, surely?

Basically if you can touch any wiring or internal components with your fingers then it's hazardous. Even more so if there's children on the premises.

I would send them an email and state if they don't respond or repair it within a couple of working days you'll take it to mean you should replace the fitting with a new one that's similar and deduct it from the rent.

if you can spray water directly into the fitting, it's not got an adequate IP rating for zone 2. have you got a copy of BS7671 and the OSG.? reg. 701.32.4 and 701.512.2.

Not got the wiring regs yet been told not to get them until next year. I could copy the regs and OSG from college tomorrow though and send an email with them stating the regs, thanks for the advice. Yes I can touch the wires and spray with water and the stupid cow knows this as she came and did my inspection a few weeks ago. Had the nerve to tell me to clear the kids toys up in the back yard and she would be coming back in december to check up on it! I can go to the council and report the landlord and agency for failing to repair and its the not first time they have left stuff so I have already told her unless its sorted I will report them and that was last thursday and she still hasnt been in touch. What lovely people I have to deal with. I will get on to this tomorrow many thanks.

701.512.2 states that this requirement does not apply to shaver units. Would this just be the shaver plug or the shaver light I have stuck to the wall? No shaver output on it so I think that would mean the regs state that its protection is IPX7 or IPX4?

Ollie I would imagine that with an outer case removed the shaver socket does not comply with any standards except the standard that it is bloody dangerous, let alone BS EN 61558-2-5

Quote reg 134.1.1 where a piece of equipment should be installed in accordance with manufacturers instructions, and if you can get a tech sheet of the internet, where i'll be my pension it will advise you not to expose the internal part of the unit unless it is safely isolated.

Mind you, in fairness to the situation, I vividly remember the morning spent on the phone to a DNO explaining to them why it was dangerous to have half the meter (old style) smashed up and bits hanging out.....they didn't get it, either.

I cant put a pic up at the minute will try to work on it tonight when I get home just waiting for my level 2 2330 mod 1 exam :)
My tutor has found some regs in the big red book that state it should be 2.5m away from the bath which it isnt and should be covered fully which it isnt. Goint to see what authority I need to reprt to and copy my email in to the agency or email agency what is in the letter I compose and send off to them.
Many thanks for your advice.
