Hi there

Just looking for some advice from people , i worked as a apprentice electrician for 1 year back when i left school at 16 to 17 , due to circumstances back then i got laid off due to the company i was with had no more work and then i couldnt swap over to college full time course , so i was told that i had to wait for the following september to enroll again on the course .

i then took a office job with the nhs and have been here for 4 yours ( soul destroying) i want to get back into the trade but i really dont no how to go about it , i cant afford to give up work to go to college full time again or take a wage drop to be a apprentice , my current shifts at the nhs now are mon - fri 5pm - 11pm and these will be permeant , so i was thinking of going back to college and doing a night course over 4 years to become a fully qualified spark . due to my shifts now i can work during the day to get practical experience. just wondering if any one has been in this postion i.e going to night college to gain the qualification , and also will electrical contracting firms even look at taking me on now due to my age .

any info would be great thanks

Many guys are training in a similar couple of nights a week method. You should contact your local college for further information with regards to the 2330 or 2357.

One of the colleges I work for are still running the 2330 for a few years for career changers and evening studies, and the 2357 is being used for work based learners.

Well age is definitely on your side so don't make any impulse decisions.

There is a lot of great advice on here and I'm sure someone will be along shortly to help point you in the best direction.

Please be warned, you will be training in an area where there is currently very little work so a longer course may well be the right way to go?

Good luck

Thanks for the fast replies guys , ive contacted my college i have to go in on the 14th of july for a talk , when i have spoke to them before they have told me that i dont need to work in the industry to do the course , but i much would prefer to do that even if its only a couple hours a week to gain that practical experience , like i said i do have a years experiece alredy and do have a good bank of practical knowledge already

i work 5 shifts a week i work every saturday and sunday so i only work 3 shifts in the week with 2 days off , so when i find out what night my course is i can arrange my midweek shifts around it

Level 3 is only a year part time anyway I believe.

I know people who have done both the 2330 levels 2 and 3 full time three days a week in one academic year.

Could be a good option for you?

I saw a advert, become a fully qualified spark in four weeks. They reckon in that four weeks you can get the 2330....2382....2391 might be worth a shot if you have some experience

Yer man, I think they are aimed at experienced sparks with no quals who would breeze through it to get the quals to be part p or employed etc.......the best advice I can ever give anyone is to buy the most basic book before collage. On AMAazon there is a book "Collins complete wiring & lighting" it's worth buying trust me you would have such a edge, it's also upto date with 17th £1.97 man you can't miss out on that
