how to check alternator of Genset

I have a 30 kw Genset, why when turned on, do not read volts on a volt meter. but the voltage read, after I shift the change over switch on the generator line.

genset: toyota dyna engine, 30 kw 3 phase alternator

as I know, volt meter displays the nominal voltage of the generator once is turned on, even without a load. but why on this alternator, volt meter displays readings, after the generator is connected to the load.

The meter should be showing volts when it's running, off load or on load.

What do you think it should be showing?

correct, but at this alternator, volt meter only shows volts when the alternator while in the load, and if no load, volt meter reading "0". just just like an ampere meter.

Can you post a drawing of the alternator control please, I am just guessing. That is not a good way to find a fault.
