How to get a weatherproof seal on conduit?

Quite often I see conduit going into an adaptable box or conduit box 'outside'. This is fine if it is coming in from the bottom, you can just use a normal adaptor to go into the box, but often it comes in from the side and the adaptors are not IP rated.

I just wondered if anyone here uses conduit as in the above example (or even when conduit has to enter from the top of the box) and if so are you completety happy that it will be waterproof?

I tried one of the MK Masterseal cable Glands (for conduit) which supposidly gives you a weathertight seal, but it didn't fill me with confidence (falls out easily) so I didn't use it.

Does that mean I need to drill a drain hole in our lass, replace her gaskets, and fill her with compound ?

Sometimes I'll use PVC adhesive (for PVC conduit, obviously):
PVC Adhesive - Tin

or this stuff is pretty good, although I've not tried it on conduit:
Geocel The Works Sealant & Adhesive Clear 290ml | Weatherproof Sealants | Screwfix.com

As above, I'll generally try not to drill holes in the top face of any electrical enclosure for use outside. Whatever precautions you use, you've got to assume that water will get in somehow and put a good sized drain hole anywhere that water might collect. I usually use 4 or 5mm.

Avoid entering the top of any box that's externally mounted, even with a seal of some sort with the constant expansion and contraction with changing temperatures it will almost certainly leak eventually.

Sod all that poncy stuff ... Gaffer Tape is your friend here.

Ahh, taken from the gospel according to Tony Swiss I believe!

20 mm conduit should fit through a 32mm compression gland, which should come with rubber washers. I've found that smearings of vaseline help. (Those 2 sentences are connected)
