Evening all..

I have 3 pillar lights that are situated along a customers driveway, perhaps 25m long. They are on the grass with a small amount of concrete underneath. They are full of crap and muck where the ants get in and make there nests. There is not enough room under this light to get an IP box into it and the ants just keep coming back again and again as soon as the ant killer disappears.

There is only a small amount of cable to play with. It's SWA so has not been terminated properly.

I have managed to get a line enclosure to fit underneath and taped the joints up as much as possible but the IR results have again become bad.

This has been going on for the past 2 years. I have now advised the customer to get them completely changed as it will be cheaper for him to do this than pay me every few months to come and clean out the muck.

Any ideas on how to make this joint at least IPx4?

Personally I think I am going to have to suggest new cable, properly terminated in a decent underground box with magic gell or above in adaptable box? But, I then still need to get the termination joint under the pillar completely ant proof and it is a very small area???

Cheers.

Cheers Homecert!!! :D:D

I really didn't think anyone was going to come up with any easy solutions to this one, but there it is.... a little box that will fit in the space I need and is IP68!! :)

Gel filled terminal box (as above) or a tee tube cable connector or cheaper equivalent, or if you are feeling spacious a plug and socket type.
Alternatively wrap the connector in self amalgamating tape, heavily overlapped and double or triple covered.
You have different problems with the lack of SWA glanding and also with fitting an SWA cable into one of the above boxes.
I suppose you could just fill the whole space with gel, but the cost would be phenomenal.

Remove the Earth bar and replace with cable.
Place the terminal block in a Choc box and terminate, fill Choc box with magic gel or resin and close.

Is there room for a trouser/Y galv conduit box? Two glands in, flex with good quality stuffer out. Lid gasket and 4mm rear screw should see you OK water wise, with small lever wagos or through crimps, depending on number of cables.

There really is no excuse now for a bad outside joint - so many well thought out JBs and capsules.
With more people requesting outside lighting and leisure type power requirements, it pays to know what’s available - especially if you can pass on the costs as ‘they ain’t cheap’
