Hi fellow bright sparks , I hope you all like problem solving.

I have purchased a commercial microwave it is 400V AC 50 Hz , 16A, 10,5Kw its a large one
it works super quick , will cook a chicken in 3 minutes including browning, a friend of mine has the right supply in his workshop!
My problem is the people who are interested in it are asking if it can be converted to 240V - can it be converted - does it need converting ? can I simply connect a 240V supply to it and it takes 6 minutes not 3 ?.
any help would be much appreciated.

thanks
Mike

Hi MikeyD,

I must admit I am impressed by the speed of the microwave for chickens. KFC had better watch out.

On the conversion point, I guess if it is a three phase system then this would depend on what connections you have available at the microwave, the control system and of course the earthing arrangements. The best thing I can suggest is for you to give the manufacturer a ring and see if there tech guys will sanction it as it is a commercial unit and their warranty / cover could be affected.

Hope this helps,

Best wishes,

Rex

I don't think it'll be able to draw over 2kw/3kw of power

you could buy capacitors and then introduce a 120 and 240 degree lag on the 240v, this gives "artificial" 3 ph. Ive installed units before, but they were supplied by the pump manufacturer of the 3ph pump we were running fom 1ph supply
