Hi all,

Odd question of the day :: they're going to cut power to my street tomorrow... all day long.

I get internet connection through phone line (DSL) and would need to keep the router going during the power cut. Need it for work.

How can I keep the router going? 12 V battery with ac/dc adapter? Not sure how long it'd last. Any ideas?

many thanks,

Pete

rent a genny for the day and run whatever you need to

It would depend on the router and to a smaller degree how much you use it, and of course how much you are prepared to pay for a battery!

A hired generator is one option, assuming you can safely leave it in your garden outdoors (safe from theft, and safe for kids not getting injured, etc.).

Might be cheaper to find a cafe with wifi and just keep buying coffees!

You've left it a bit late to arrange anything now.

Can you use mobile data through your phone for a day? I think most mobile networks allows you to buy additional data allowance temporarily. It would cost money but probably be cheaper than the outlay on a large battery.

Have you considered that you will need power for other devices, such as a laptop/PC during this power outage.

Uninterruptible Power Supply U,P,S,

What work is being done to justify cutting power for all day, seems a bit long.?
I'm sure whoever is doing the work is just covering themselves and it won't be all day.

As above tho, it's too late to do anything now.

Getting many hours from a UPS is difficult. The cheap ones don't have the power and sometimes have stupid arbitrary limits on run-time (looking at you again, APC, a supplier of rubbish UPS).

We used to get 45min to 1h30 from out UPS but we had around 300-500W load off a 5kVA unit, partly over-specked as peak demand could be around 3-4kVA, and partly so the battery would last. The typical run-time at rated load for most UPS is of the order of 5 minutes - enough to start your backup generator, enough to orderly shut down if no genny.

Charge laptop up in advance, probably get a few hours. Use a 12v lead acid battery and fuse for the router, assuming obviously that it takes a 12VDC feed - check the details first.

Quite a lot of AC power banks on the market that would store sufficient power for a router and 2 or 3 full charges of a laptop.

No idea how important this is to the OP in terms of how much they want to spend. If self-employed it may be a worthwhile investment, but as an employee I'd be inclined to lob this at the company and let them decide what they wanted to do.

Could even consider powering your router from your cars cigarette lighter/aux socket via one of those switchable regulators. Cheap as chips. Should last a fair few hours as well.

as DPG's post. good car battery, but a cheap inverter to give 240V. only need about 200watts max. can also plug in cordles phone or mobile charge if required.

Even better solution, plug into your neighbours socket and give them a tenner to cover it. Easy and cheap.

whole street is off for the day.
unless you live next door to me, you are likely to get nothing from the neighbour!!
