How was taught to wire lighting circuits?

Yep, nearly always take N to switch for many reasons.

Another is switches I have installed in a grid that have neon indicators, some of these need a neutral.
 
At college they showed us both methods but concentrated on looping at the rose. He was an old school lecturer and taught us a lot more than what C&G exams asked of us. Better to be prepared for what happens in the real world for when you come across it and also you now know an alternative for when you need it.
