Im hoping to become an electrical engineer or be involved in HV systems i.e. working on power stations but i dont really have much knowledge on how to go about it & if i am even eligable. Im a domestic/commercial electrician and have a HNC in electrical engineering would this be recognised as a suitable level of experiance to enter the HV industry for training of would i need to get a degree first, also what is the best route to take/

any advice would be gratley appreciated
thanks

Your HNC will be a help in gaining an entry into the Power Engineering industry, perhaps as a junior or trainee engineer. You will need to gain a good degree and gaining chartered status should be your overall aim. There will also be an awful lot of practical training involved throughout the different disciplines within the power engineering sector before you'll gain full Engineer status.

It's only at that point do you specialise, in one of the many sectors, such as protection, generation, equipment etc. Even then, there are sub-sectors, such as field erection, maintenance and the like...

This is not just a case of going through an Authorised Person training course, that in fact is the easy bit ..lol!!!

Think you'll need to do a good bit of research into this area before you take the plunge. It is still a very lucrative industry, and holds opportunities not only in the UK but throughout the world. Power Engineers are and always will be in great demand. So good luck to you!!
