Anyone know where to start with HV training?

Quite fancy doing cable jointing or overhead works but not sure how to start.

Any info on:

courses?
price?
job opportunitys?

cheers

Hang on.... ...... picks up folder..... right....I got sent this a while ago, they do different courses.... Electrical Training | Plumbing Training | Gas Training in fact they do too many courses to list here, they are in Corby and Rotherham in England.....looks good to me...a great training company by the looks of it...

The only thing about doing courses is, are you going to go to an agency and get told (in reference to certificates) gimme that! (grab)....(scans into computer) right heres a job as an Electrician for the power board, 8 pounds an hour.............(20 minutes later phones company with recruit details) that will cost you 35pounds an hour for this "highly skilled installer" *customer- no problem tell him to start monday*

It is very good to get as many tickets as possible, but only if YOU are the one benefiting, not somebody else i.e AN AGENCY PEN PUSHER.....get the tickets, set yourself up limited company or self employed then do sub-contract work and name your hourly rate or price for a job.....dont let your training fall into the hands (and pockets) of the agency cronies...fill your pockets...and your wallet...and your bank, not theirs...do training courses for YOURSELF.....a lot of people are getting squeezed until the pips squeek by agencies just now and its going to get worse (they are going to get away with being more greedy) just like I said before with the First Aid certificate holders getting more charged for them (but less paid to them) by the Agencies...

I done training at Corby With a company. If you want to become a cable jointer the courses that you will do in training centres like this will only go so far. You really need too be working with an experienced jointer to get the necessary experience. You would also need to do a trade test and be authorised to work on the network for whatever area you want to work in. I am a HV/LV cable jointer and have previously worked for Scottish power, Scottish and southern energy and now electricity network company and I have learned more "on the job" than any training centre. Some company's do adult apprenticeships which start with a decent wage. Good luck with whatever you decide.

If you want HV training then you need to go to one of the specialist HV installer/maintenance providers

HVMS The best in the business and Martin is one of the most knowledgeable there is.

EON do a really good course, these guys know there stuff and some of the Engineers I know attended their course and speak very highly of it.

However I have heard good things about the HV courses that the Faraday Center operate

Bear in mind that you cannot become an AP unless they can assess you in the building where you work because you have to know and understand the Switching and emergency procedures in your building. All you will receive is the training, then if you get a Job where HV is required your employer would pay for the training and assessment in your building.

Here is a little reading for you from the HSE on Switchgear safety

And here is a downloadable publication on keeping switchgear safe

This might be a interesting read as it give an insight in the HV network via this code of practice

Hope that is of some use to you.
