Can anyone recommened a training course for carrying out terminations / connections on a HV (MV if you like) system?
The system in question is 15Kv, mainly underground cable runs with terminations into transformers, etc.

To my knowledge, there is no such distribution Voltage Band of 15KV in the UK. What you will find is, that cables, equipment and termination kits etc are rated for 15/18KV for 11KV distribution systems....

I'll leave others to advise on available training courses in the UK, but be warned, they are expensive. There are as i remember, similar threads on this question of HV/MV training....

Are your employers paying for this? The last time I did a jointing course it was over £2000 for two weeks fifteen+ years back. But that was for paper lead cables, modern materials are cheaper, but the course prices will have risen.

Out of interest I looked up the price of a 50Gm roll of Antimonial Lead wire used to terminate the screening in paper lead cables, £58+VAT per roll. Now a piece of heat shrink plastic tube.

Yes, employer is paying.
Scottish Power are offering this course.

I'm not 100% sure if this includes joining though.
I have e-mailed them for a clarification.

Now Scottish Power have gotten back to me to say that they were unable to offer training to external customers.
How difficult can it be to get HV jointing training?

To be honest E54 jointing is a difficult one. You can do as many joints as you like in a workshop, it’s only when a joint or termination is under real load that the skill can be proved. A joint / termination can be tested in the workshop, but you can’t simulate the electro / magnetic shock that a real life situation will impose.

The first 1MVA transformer termination I did I was bricking myself when it was made live. If it survives the inrush of a transformer it will survive most things. As time went on and the load increased I relaxed. To prove the termination I tried starting two 150HP DOL fans at the same time. That would slam over the full load of the transformer on the termination. I wasn’t worried about the connections but the stress relief in the cable crutch. No heat shrink then, antimonial lead wire wound and soldered around the cores. I then tried starting three fans, the transformer O/L’s didn’t like that. Backside kicking time, but the boss was grinning as he told me off, he knew why I wanted to prove the first one.
