hi, ive been reading through this forum for a couple of weeks now, but i still cant get my head round a few things. ive seen some people saying just do the job and issue the cert etc. but who do u issue the cert to and how is this possible if your not registered with any1? im just wondering because i think i want to make the jump to being self employed, im currently unemployed having served my time working on commercial projects. i was laid off as soon as my grading came through so im not the most experienced spark around and i havnt any money to cough up for memberships or advertising i was just going to take vistaprint up on their offer of some "free" business cards to try get started. also i dont have my 2391 yet.

clarification on this matter would be much appreciated

It can get bloody confusing....this is what I reckon but I may be wrong, to ba fair it's all open to interpretation...

Anyone can write a certificate, it's simply writing stuff on a bit of paper. You have to have an electrical qualification to write proper certificates, I think the LEAST you can have is a level 2 VRQ (domestic installer qual, issued by the EAL or city and guilds or someone like that), but that's not all. For the cert to be valid it has to be 'passed' by someone who is competent. If you join a competent persons scheme (elecsa, nic etc) then you can write and approve certificates i.e. they are valid. If you don't, you have to have someone who is able to sign off someone elses work look over your work before the certificate is issued - this person is the inspector for building control, and this will cost you (ÂŁ110 in my area).

If you are joining a competent scheme you will have to inform building control for the job/s that you are doing to show the schemes assessor. This will cost you the 110 per job, and you will never have to get the building control man out because (provided you pass) you will be able to 'sign off' the job through your scheme. So basically you will have paid 110 for the privilege of filling out a confusing planning application form. This is the reason your local council can afford to put traffic lights in stupid locations.

Hope this straightens it out a bit. Good luck.

EDIT: Oh yer and you issue one copy of your cert to the customer, and you keep one. I think some schemes want you to send you one to them, but elecsa dont because they are top.

good luck

do your 2391 (and study, cos it's no walk in the park like the other exams)

failing that you could start off self employemnt fitting kitchens and sign off certs as a sideline to bring in some extra cash once you got your part P

^^ that was a joke by the way

wish you all the luck in the world man :) where u located?

yeh im entitled to my 2391 for qualifying withing 4 years, although to get this i have to be working for a firm ha, big joke if you ask me. i spoke to my training officer and he wouldnt advise doing my 2391 until ive gained abit more experience. which is fair comment, i can test etc but im not the most confident and havnt had 2 much experience, but i cant get a job with a firm round near me because i dont have much experience but i cnt get experience unless some1s going to give me a chance.its catch 22 and driving me nuts, im confident in my ability as a spark regarding install and working towards the regs. im based in leeds. so to start with i could do installs test them and get my dads friend (niceic registered) to countersign my certificates?
