I was thinking....

So I was sat thinking about emergency lighting (like every other 21 year old apprentice) I wondered if there was any reason other than price and size practicality as to why emergency lighting systems aren't wired into houses in case of power cuts etc? I appreciate its a completely OTT daft idea but I was just wondering. Also is there such a thing as an emergency light control panel (like a fire panel) where the batteries are stored that control all the lights? If so can someone post a link to one.

EM lights are to allow the safe evacuation of building. When power has gone off at home i tend to sit in the dark, maybe with a candle, or go to bed. Thought about fitting one over the fusebox mind

Dont have a link but yes some systems use central batteries rather than stand-alone in each unit, google emergency lights central battery systems or something like that

Central battery systems are rare now. They are expensive, require maintenance and require fire proof cabling and seperate cabling routes to the lights. This is why maintained emergency lighting is preferred on most jobs.

This one I'm working at is immensely expensive compared to the standard fittings. Also involves panels fed with coil feeds from many different distribution boards and circuits. It took me a while to get my head around it as I've never see one before.

I put em lights in my council house years ago,during a power cut the woman from next door came round saw them and said she was going to complain to council as she hadn,t got them fitted lol

A couple of years back in late November there was a good bit of snow on the ground. The lights flickered off and back on then stayed off, about 30 yards of our street had gone off and as luck would have it the break in the cable was right outside of us so we had guys with a minidigger going from about 10PM. Twas great fun trying to get to kip with that going, and we had to sit in the dark for hours.

Houses do have emergency lighting - it's called a torch

last year we had the council painting white lines on the road outside our house - from 12am till about 1:30am. probably not as noisy as a mini digger, but it wasn't from lack of trying.
