Hi all,

7 weeks into an Electrical Control Systems course and I've taken apart the DC motor that came from the extractor fan which wasn't working. Trying to id parts and familiarise myself with motors in general.

Think the copper wiring on both sides is the field winding (are these also known as the rotor windings?). Not sure of the wiring setup. I'll explain the arrangement anyway. Black wire soldered to one copper wire strand on left hand side (LHS). White and brown same on LHS. Yellow wire bridges both fileds. Soldered to copper wire on LHS and into heat shrink on RHS so can't see where that goes. From other side of heat shrink it goes to copper wire again on RHS (hope my explaination is clear). Finally there's a red wire soldered to the copper wire on the RHS.

The controls for operating the fan are these wires I presume. There's an on-off and three different speeds.

I'm not sure what the name for the main outside frame is. It's made up of thin discs to reduce eddy currents-that I know. I think there's also a name for the internal frame.

Finally I'm wondering what the copper wires are for in the middle. You can see 2-off but there are 4-off altogether.

Anyway, just curious. Anyone that can advise any good literature to read or websites to learn more about motors, feel free to let me know.

God bless,

It's a shaded-pole motor. Notice the two copper loops; shading rings thems is. Thin discs = laminations.

Are you sure it's DC?

Sorry, you're right. It's AC - no brushes. laminations - that's the word. Couldn't think of it. So they provide resisttance against eddy currents? Exact same pic of the shading coils on the Google search. That's deadly. Thanks man.
