Never knew insulation tape could be used to joint 35mm cable...

That's nice, cheaper than crimps... I especially love the tin worm evidence...

You original post comes across as the cables have just been butted up together and taped over

This was my first thought when I had opened the panel but I'm pretty sure they are crimped, first time I've seen it done like this. I should have taken a picture of the cables going into the panel really, it seems the person who has done this deliberately went out of their way to finish the job like this. It would have been far easier for them to resin joint them and leave in the cable trench.

Maybes it would have but whoever has done it has made sure it wasnt left in a dangerous way, i think you would have to be really niave to think that them 35mm cables, wouldnt have had some form of electrical heat damaged had they just been taped together

I'd be more worried about the state of the corrosion of the gland plate of that enclosure if I were you.

Heatshrink over the through crimps would have been a much better job IMO but, have seen it done this way many a time.

Well I think the fact I have only ever worked on one site and never seen anything like this before has made me a bit naive. Oh well learn something new and all that.

No - not seen too much paper lead, but have seen some real dodgy joints though.

I have seen a 11KV torpedo joint which was only half filled with resin, they noticed it just before they were due to switch on.
