Is the immerser re-set activated by exccess water temp or by an electrical overload,I have a new one that trips on an irregular basis, I have tested the circuit Cont and IR all the way from distribution to point of use, the breaker does not trip and all switches are ok

it's a thermal overload, trips when the element gets too hot. usual cure is to replace the element. make sure the top of the heater is not smothered under clothes etc. as that acts like insulation. causing the unit to overheat.

Cheers for that I had an idea that it may be a faulty stat, any idea what KW a immerser is I suppose it depends on tank size, but I imagine a 3 K heater any ideas any one

generally 3kW for a standard element. think they're 21" long. i've had a few done the same. new element and stat. cured problem. sometimes the element gets furred up and can't dissipate the heat.

I would replace the element, thermostat and overload all together. They're not expensive and the difference in labour time is negligible. Rather do it that way than end up making two or three visits to replace them individually until you find which one is causing the kak.

wht you need a plumber for? turn off the water feed to the tank. turn on the hot taps till they stop. remove element ( hammer and chisel not a good option) with a couple of towels to catch the spillage. remove element slowly so as you can screw it back if you've got it wrong and more than a cupful of water comes out.

So is there a direct relationship between element length and stat length I replaced a 18" stat so is it a 27" element ?

It is more a relationship between element length and size of tank. Too small and you won't be able to heat all the water in the tank. Same with thermostat length - too short and you won't have much control of temp of the whole volume of water. Basically replace what you take out with the same size.
Unless you come across pillocks who build in the cold water tank 10" above where an 18" thermostat should go

Bendy thermostats anyone?

if you've a back boiler or anything heating the cylinder-that can cause a problem

on a re-wire recently the customer told me they had a plumber change 4 immersion heaters before he figured what was happening

Yep been there I had to cut a 2" hole in a shelf in a cupboard, and the trouble I have is no one here will stock elements and the local plumbers will hang onto what they have, common sense really, and I have to have everything shipped(literally) in, so if I take it out to see I would have to put it back in, order it, and well you can guess the rest.
