Immersion controller VAT rating

We are starting to install intelligent immersion controllers for PV, just wondering if anyone has done one and what VAT to charge? My buisness partner and i have differing opinions on whether it would qualify for the 5% VAT rate if we are installing it on its own.

As part of a PV system install we could throw it in at 5%.

When we update heating controls the vat rate is 5% so I would have thought it's the same.

HM Revenue & Customs: Paying reduced rate VAT on energy-saving materials

"What qualifies for the lower rates of VAT? Installation of any of the following qualifies for the lower rate of VAT:

• controls for central heating and hot water systems
• draught insulation (eg around windows and doors)
• insulation on walls, floors, ceilings, lofts, etc
• solar panels
• wind turbines
• water turbines
• ground-source heat pumps
• air-source heat pumps
• micro combined heat and power units
• wood-fuelled boilers

You can only get these lower rates if the energy saving materials are actually installed, and the work is done on your home. You'll be charged the lower rate on the installation work itself as well as the materials."

Thanks guys, for some reason i was thinking it was renewable energy systems rather than energy saving systems.


As for the controller the manfacturer has run out of stock and we can't get any for at least a few weeks untill they build some more. We have spent over a year looking for the right one and have a long list of customers who want one so i hope you will forgive me for not saying what it is at the moment. Sorry...

There's a good possiblity that they will scale up the manufacture in the future and if they become available again i will let you know. At present the production capacity is very limited.
