Hi,

Probably a daft question but I'm going to ask anyway. We have moved into a new property which has an immersion heater, we're just not sure how it works exactly. One picture below shows a 'main switch' located in the kitchen which is obviously the immersion main on/off switch and the other shows a timer switch located upstairs next to the boiler with a dial (top right) that toggles the 'tab' from red to green.

I'm not sure exactly how to operate the timer. Does the main switch need to be on downstairs for the timer even to work or does it run independent of the main switch? Going off the picture below does anyone know how the timer works as there appears to be no time zones to set (e.g on at X time, off at Y time etc). The clock always shows the current time so how would I set it to come on at, for example, 7am?

Apologies for the basic/daft questions but any help would be appreciated then I can impress the wife and claim all the credit.

Cheers

The answer for the first part of question as I see it is......Imm/switch downstairs "on" position. Most probably wired that way years ago, to switch the imm/htr on and off and save going up and down stairs to control the imm/htr. Now that time clock installed switch must be left "on" position. Unable to help with 2nd part as not familiar with that clock

switch the downstairs switch on, then see if the clock runs. then, if it does, you leave the switch on and set the on/off times with the clock. i assume the front cover clips off to access the settings, but , as last post., don't force it.

Thanks for the quick replies. The cover did indeed pop off after a bit of jiggling to reveal a dial underneath (see attached). It appear the dial has no independent function though, i.e. no other function that turning the dial that's accessible without popping the cover off. I think I can work it out from here though as there's only one time you can set on this dial it must be the time you want it to come on rather than the current time. I'm presuming it gets the current time from the central heating electronic timer/time.

yep. small plastic clips that fit on those teeth round the ouside. a ne clock is only about ÂŁ20. be best idea to get a spark replace the timer and check the circuit and operation for you. ( i cover manchester west & south )

No, current time is only displayed if you leave the switch on downstairs, the only source of power applied.
If you have white meter or off peak, set the timer to cheap (ie never nowadays :laugh3:) times.
