looked at a job the other day (db change) there was no earth from the incoming supply no visable earth rod, only an earth block supplying the db with a 2.5 going to somewhere under the floor boards i suspect to the mains water/gas(boxed away somewhere will find later). the owner ( inherited house) rang e-on who said your sparky can put the earth in.i always thought we weren't supposed to mess with "their side". just wondered on others opinions would you earth from the neutral incomer or add earth rod

I suspect they were talking about you installing an earth electrode and making the earthing system TT, I had a similar problem recently were the main water was used as the means of earthing, so had to install an earth electrode, EDF were talking silly money to provide an earth.

What sort of property is this? The system must be TT if theres no supply earth but it sounds like there isnt an earth electrode fitted either?!?!

Sounds like you need to install your own earth electrode. Not anything I've done before and I'm interested in how much thats likely to cost.

thanks for the replies
the guys a retired spark but didnt want to touch it himself cause of part p, he rang the board and they said we could do it either way and that they were only responsible for the supply not earthing.obviously coming of neutral would be easiest but just wondered if others had come across this.
not to sure on rest of house yet, said i would change db first then when testing new db any other issue s would be found when testing,as for age it still got one of them old light/heaters fitted in the bathroom!l:eek:
its not tt, its got old wylex
